Stereo sound innovator and early godfather of the lounge music revolution, Enoch Light's Persuasive Percussion albums set the tone for an entire era of sophisticated partying, and also employed recording techniques that were groundbreaking in their time and would still sound fresh decades later. Following the success of those albums came volume upon volume of the Provocative Percussion spin-off series, and Provocative Percussion Vols. 3 & 4 collects 24 loungy instrumental tracks somewhere between the big-band sound and the increasingly groovy living stereo sound that Light pioneered, including takes on standard hits like "The Look of Love" and "On the Street Where You Live."

Electric Light Orchestra's more modest follow-up to Eldorado is a very solid album, if not as bold or unified. It was also their first recorded at Musicland in Munich, which became Jeff Lynne's preferred venue for cutting records. At the time, he was also generating songs at a breakneck pace and had perfected the majestic, quasi-Beatles-type style (sort of high-wattage Magical Mystery Tour) introduced two albums earlier. The sound is stripped down a bit on Face the Music, Louis Clark's orchestral contributions generally more subdued than on Eldorado, even when they compete with the band, as on "Strange Magic"…

The sound is stripped down a bit on Face the Music, Louis Clark's orchestral contributions generally more subdued than on Eldorado, even when they compete with the band, as on "Strange Magic." The soulful "Evil Woman" was one of the most respectable chart hits of its era, and one of the best songs that Lynne ever wrote (reportedly in 30 minutes), while "Strange Magic" showed off his writing in a more ethereal vein.

Genre: Rock, Folk Rock, Blues Rock, Psychedelic, Prog Rock, Classic Rock | Label: Harvest/EMI Records | Catalog Number: SHTW 801

Although there are those who nail their spirals to Vertigo as the prog label of choice, EMI’s Harvest certainly vies with it for pole position. With Harvest, the detail was everything. Loaded with the bizarre, striking and the strange, turns abounded like the Third Ear Band, Kevin Ayers and The Greatest Show On Earth. From the bad acid of Edgar Broughton’s There’s No Vibrations, But Wait through the squiffy majesty of Dave Mason’s You Shouldn’t Have Took More Than You Gave, to Be- Bop Deluxe’s future pop of Jet Silver and the Dolls Of Venus, this collection is impressive and nostalgic – its very lack of a house style providing its consistency.
