An excellent and exhaustive collection of rarities in a beautiful double digipack packaging including her collaborations with Plaid, Tricky, 808 State or A Tribe Called Quest, a wonderful live performance of "Satisfaction" with PJ Harvey, her tracks for soundtracks ("James Bond", Anton", "Being John Malkovich", unreleased takes from "Dancer in the dark") and a lot of rare and promo mixes. A must for fans.

An unrepentant believer in the power of classic rock and R&B, Melissa Etheridge sounded like a throwback to the 1970s when she delivered her eponymous debut in 1988. Her raspy delivery recalled that of Rod Stewart and her belief in the restorative power of rock & roll suggested peak Bruce Springsteen, while her commitment to lean, straight-ahead heartland rock aligned her with John Mellencamp. Etheridge would never abandon traditional rock & roll values but she found a way to not only keep these familiar sounds fresh, she found a way to make them personal. Much of this skill was evident on Melissa Etheridge, Brave and Crazy and Never Enough–the trio of records she released around the turn of the 1990s, albums that generated such rock radio hits as "Bring Me Some Water," "Similar Features," "No Souvenirs" and "Ain't It Heavy," the latter winning Etheridge her first Grammy–but her 1993 album Yes I Am is where she broke through into the mainstream. Just prior to its release, Etheridge became one of the first prominent rockers to come out publicly as a lesbian, an event that raised her public profile thereby bringing Yes I Am to a wider audience, one that turn the album into a multi-platinum blockbuster, spinning off the hits "I'm the Only One" and "Come to My Window."

The Compost crew gets their hands on Ennio Morricone for some major remix efforts. On Remixes Vol. 1, International Pony kicks things off with a silly homage ditty, but Alex Attias and Swell Session quickly get things into house territory with their mixes. If you've ever wanted to dance to the harmonica of "Il Buono, Il Brutto, Il Cattivo," now's your chance! And, as expected, Hakan Lidbo goes tech-house blippy on "Alla Serenita." Leroy Hanghofer brings some bright, ringing tones to "Beat N. 3," while Needs offers "Amore Come Dolore" some mellow jazz. Kabuki puts some speedy breaks to "Dal Mare," and the Butti 49 give "Rivoluzione" an Afro-jazz vibe…

Synth-pop, Disco | FLAC (tracks) | Cover | 01:07:25 | 437 MB + 5% Recovery
Label: Virgin Records Limited | Tracks: 16 | Rls.date: 2003

This record was a collaboration between Philip Oakey, the big-voiced lead singer of the techno-pop band the Human League, and Giorgio Moroder, the Italian-born father of disco who spent the '80s writing synth-based pop and film music. It is a testimony to Moroder's fame as a composer that he was able to earn equal billing with Oakey for a record he co-wrote and produced, but for which he supplied no more than "occasional synthesizers" as a musician. The music is not substantially different from the standard fare from the Human League or, for that matter, almost any other synth-based Europop band in the '80s.

You Gotta Go There to Come Back joined its predecessors at #1 on release. It was re-issued with bonus tracks in February 2004, coming into the UK charts again at #35, finally re-entering at #16 in September 2004. It was the 28th biggest selling album of 2003 in the UK. The track "Maybe Tomorrow" became one of their biggest hits; it was played over the credits of the Academy Award-winning movie Crash (2004) and also during the opening scene of the film Wicker Park (2004). It was also used in a season one episode of One Tree Hill and featured on the first Charmed soundtrack.
