Secrets, Dobson’s second release under the Deep Sea Diver moniker, sees her continue her run as one of modern indie music’s most interesting guitarists. Her angular playing style visibly bears the influence of Spoon and St. Vincent, two acts known for their gritty yet tidy guitar work, but it also benefits from a winsome angle of attack that is more than capable of drawing the listener in. The abrupt, splattering opening to “Wide Awake”, for instance, is an exercise in mood-building, whilst the satisfying crunch that drives "Notice Me” is particularly adept at papering over the fault lines that typically lie between ballads and rock songs. Much of Deep Sea Diver’s success is also down to the diligence applied by Dobson’s co-stars, namely drummer (cum husband) Peter Mansen, bassist Garrett Gue, and synth programmer Elliot Jackson.

At the dawn of the 60’s, well before pop’s ascensionnotes along with its given extravagances, a few turbulent arrangers and other exceptionally gifted orchestrators were already attempting out of the ordinary musical experiences, amusing themselves by using major orchestras in a fully-fledged laboratory capacity. They would do so by using stereophonic effects, exotic percussion and alternatively played instruments to give their compositions strange colours and audacious perspectives. Michel Legrand, a rapidly rising young composer at this time and breaking with the most complex writing techniques, was part of this generation of untamed conductors with very big ideas within which included a wide array of personalities from Esquival, Les Baxter and Lalo Schifrin to Quincy Jones.

Don Ellis was such a talented trumpeter, composer, and organizer that everything he recorded as a leader has at least some unusual moments worth exploring. His big bands were characterized by big brassy arrangements, odd meters that somehow always swung, lots of trumpet solos by Ellis, and an often visceral excitement. Although not equal to his best records such as Electric Bath, this late recording of Ellis' band is filled with all these traits, and thus exudes lots of excitement and electricity. At this stage in his career, the trumpeter seemed to be searching for a breakthrough, perhaps on a popular level. This manifests itself with occasional Age of Aquarius vocals and spacy harmonies that appeal to a broad audience…
