""Rather than make a traditional covers record, I thought it would be much more fun to create a new type of project in which artists communicated with each other and swapped a song for a song, i.e. you do one of mine and I'll do one of yours, hence the title - Scratch My Back - And I'll Scratch Yours." An Oscar-winning film composer associated with both French and American art-house cinemas, Lebanon-born Gabriel Yared started his career as a pop composer and musical arranger for the likes of Michel Jonasz and Françoise Hardy. His first encounter with films came in 1973 with Samy Pavel's Miss O'Gynie et les Hommes Fleurs. Six years later, he was invited by Jean-Luc Godard to score Every Man for Himself, and went on to compose up to seven scores a year. Unlike other prolific film composers, such productivity didn't result in simple repetition; Yared sought his inspiration in various genres and styles, ranging from classics to folk, rock, and jazz. His moody saxophone compositions in Betty Blue and his score for The Lover, which experimented with Asian instruments, were awarded Césars (French Oscars).

Generally regarded as Peter Gabriel's finest record, his third eponymous album finds him coming into his own, crafting an album that's artier, stronger, more song-oriented than before. Consider its ominous opener, the controlled menace of "Intruder." He's never found such a scary sound, yet it's a sexy scare, one that is undeniably alluring, and he keeps this going throughout the record…

Part three of the B-Sides and Rarities set is fronted with some quite bizarre sleeve work and contains quite a few rare live numbers which Gabriel fans will thoroughly enjoy. The opening Here Comes The Flood with Robert Fripp is a stunner and there are two good remixes, firstly of Sledgehammer which is maybe even better than the original, and In Your Eyes. Two of the live tracks I mention were taken from 1983 and performed with Steve Hackett and Mike Rutherford. Another essential utility bootleg instalment.

Gallicantus perform music surrounding the fascinating yet tragic story of Queen Mary Tudor’s ‘phantom pregnancy’. On 30th April 1555 the city of London celebrated the birth of a healthy male heir, but abruptly ceased the next day after the news was revealed to be nothing but rumour. There was to be no heir, with gossip and speculation surrounding the tale of Mary’s pregnancy from that day onwards. The music performed here resonates with the circumstances of the mid-1550s, including items composed outside of Mary’s reign; from the royal ceremonies in which Mary participated as queen, and music directly tied to the specific events of 1554-5.
