Cliff Richard Voormalig Brits tieneridool, die gezegend lijkt met de <br>eeuwige jeugd. De in Lucknow, India geboren Richard neemt zijn eerste single, Move It, op in '58. <br>Het Engelse tienerpubliek hunkert op dat moment naar een nieuwe Elvis Presley. De populairste <br>Engelse rockers in die tijd in Engeland, Terry Dene en Tommy Steele, mogen dan wel aardige <br>jongens zijn (Steele is zelfs een echte komediant), ze beschikken bij lange na niet over de <br>persoonlijkheid die Presley heeft. Cliff heeft 'het' echter wel; althans tv-producer Jack Good weet <br>Richard na diens eerste hit in zijn beroemde tv-show Oh Boy zodanig te presenteren dat iedereen <br>denkt dat Cliff 'het' heeft. Na enkele echte r&amp;r-singles, zoals High Class Baby, neemt <br>Richard in '59 met zijn begeleiders The Drifters, later omgedoopt in The Shadows de <br>mediumrocker Living Doll op, zijn eerste nummer 1-hit.

Howard Skempton has established over the last 50 years a reputation as one of the UKs most accomplished and internationally-acclaimed composers, with a style which is based on traditional tonality and lyricism; but he also delights in working with unusual instruments and settings, as is clear from this superb new album including music for hurdy-gurdy, viol, medieval harp, accordion and gamelan alongside normal contemporary Western instruments.

With two of his most widely-performed works, Ecstatic Orange and The Yellow Pages, Torke practically defined post-minimalism, a music which utilises the repetitive structures of a previous generation to incorporate musical techniques from both the classical tradition and the contemporary pop world.

Fortement influencé par Grieg dont il fut l’ami à la fin de la vie du maître norvégien, il se pencha sur bien des traditions nordiques et se fit le champion de la collecte de mélodies folkloriques scandinaves. Mais ce n’était là qu’un pan de sa carrière, puisqu’il fut aussi un pianiste virtuose très demandé, un accompagnateur apparemment génial, et un compositeur productif et inventif.
