In these late Fifties sides she demonstrated the phrasing, taste and skill which marked her as one the brightest new vocalist stars of the time. Backing her are two all-star groups conducted by Sid Feller and featuring some of the greatest soloists of the New York jazz scene, including Joe Wilder, Ben Webster, Hank Jones, Georgie Auld, Mundell Lowe, George Duvivier and Don Lamond.

The legendary Vocalion label had a chequered history. Formed by the Aeolian Piano Company in 1916, it took the name from their Vocalion Organ Company subsidiary. It was bought by Brunswick in 1925, but when that label was swallowed up by Warner Bros five years later it was licensed, along with Vocalion, to the American Record Corporation. Our selection here from the legendary Vocalion label spans the period from 1926 to 1940, the year before the United States went to war. Though this includes the period of the Great Depression, significant numbers of blues records were sold and Vocalion showcased a piano-based style the music business dubbed 'urban blues', distinguishing it from the Mississippi Delta country blues. With gems from the likes of Leroy Carr, Robert Johnson and Memphis Minnie, there's no doubt the classic Vocalion repertoire on this compilation was, and still is, the cream of the blues crop.

Deluxe remastered edition of this album from cult folk artist Karen Dalton. Recorded over a six month period in 1970/71 at Bearsville, In My Own Time was Dalton's only fully planned and realized studio album. The material was carefully selected and crafted for her by producer/musician Harvey Brooks, the Renaissance man of rock-jazz who played bass on Dylan's Highway 61 Revisited and Miles' Bitches Brew. It features ten songs that reflected Dalton's incredible ability to break just about anybody's heart - from her spectral evocation of Joe Tate's One Night of Love, to the dark tragedy of the traditional Katie Cruel. Known as a great interpreter of choice material, Dalton could master both country and soul genres with hauntingly pining covers of George Jones' Take Me and Holland-Dozier Holland's How Sweet It Is.

Composer Joel Levine speaks a unique voice with the recorder with his debut release The Whistleblower on the Iyouwe label. The 13 song disc, Levine's first as a solo artist, finds the Toronto based recordist joined by singers and instrumentalists including legendary drummer and multi-Grammy award winner Lenny White. Levine says, “I grew up in Philly where I began to play the recorder in the early '60s but when the time came to move on to another instrument, as most students do, I stayed with the recorder. Everything changed when I heard Julian "Cannonball" Adderley, Sonny Rollins, Miles Davis and John Coltrane, especially Coltrane. I wanted to play that music on the recorder which, as far as I could tell, nobody ever had. I wanted to speak using the voice of the recorder."

Veteran New York City DJ Vin Scelsa was given full control of the project, and a total of 14 wonderful issues were produced. They each highlighted Vin's selections of the best tracks from the best new albums/artists of the time. In addition, the last track on every CD was a bonus acoustic track by one of the featured artists recorded in the studio just for "Grooves". It was the next best thing to listening to Vin's radio show, "Idiot's Delight".

Oliver Nelson was one of the more distinctive arrangers to be active in jazz, the studios, and popular music of the '60s. While most Nelson reissues focus on his always-excellent saxophone playing (whether on tenor or alto), this six-CD set, Argo, Verve and Impulse Big Band Studio Sessions, focuses on Oliver Nelson the arranger-composer-bandleader. He does take solos on some of these dates on tenor, alto,and soprano (his only recorded solos on that instrument), but it his writing that takes center stage.
