Sun Ra and his Intergalaxtic Arkestra's Second Star to the Right: Salute to Walt Disney goes way beyond novelty. Novelties are hardly this entertaining or enduring. Ra got into a Disney phase around 1989 when asked to interpret "Pink Elephants on Parade" from Dumbo for a pop tribute album to Disney called Stay Awake. Ra was so taken with Disney's music and images that he started to play shows dedicated exclusively to the man. When performing this material, the Arkestra went so far as to wear the patented Mouseketeer ears and had a dancer dressed in a Dumbo costume! The chosen compositions run the gamut from the more obscure to themes every kid of all ages could sing along with: "I'm Wishing," "Second Star to the Right," the eerie "The Forest of no Return," and "Someday My Prince Will Come."
Waterloo, Dancing Queen or Voulez-vous. Famous, perhaps even played a bit too frequently. But what about Waterloo as a jazz ballad or Money, Money, Money in swing?
Brisbane-born vocalist and multi-instrumentalist, Cam Giles couldn’t recall a time when music wasn’t front and centre in his life. In Cam’s musical world, anything is possible. After working with INXS in its heyday, Cam feels a special connection to their music. With that, his love of jazz and the strong traditions in jazz to reinterpret tunes, Cam’s tribute to Michael Hutchence and the music of one of the greatest bands to come out of Australia, has been a labour of love. “A couple of years ago I was playing at summer jazz festivals and doing all the classic stuff and thought, let’s mix this up a little. I used to muck around with singing Need You Tonight and it just fitted, so I did that, and a couple of others and we decided to do a few more and it fell together like that.”
Another gem from the creative Beegie Adair and her trio. This time, she is accompanied by Jeff Steinberg and his orchestra. A loving tribute to Tony Bennett and his illustrious career. As usual, Beegie includes one selection on the album where she plays solo piano and she picked 'I Left My Heart In San Francisco'. A beautiful rendition. This is a great album tinged with jazz overtones without losing the melodic memories of Tony's original sound. The orchestra is perfectly balanced and adds just the right touch while still allowing the familiar Beegie Adair Trio sound to shine through. If you are new to Beegie's music, this album will make you a convert to her impeccable sound and those like myself, have added it as another gem to her large catalog of great music.
Smooth Jazz versions of Marvin Gaye favorites: Let’s Get It On, Sęxual Healing, Mercy Mercy Me, Inner City Blues and more!
Given EMI's and Sony's ambitious Pink Floyd reissue program in 2011, a project of this type was inevitable. All the catalog selections listed here will be familiar to Floyd fans, but it should be noted that any jazz approach to the music in question should be given proper consideration in terms of pitch, time (as in real rhythm), and dynamic. Unfortunately, the Smooth Jazz All Stars provide none of these elements. They are like a group of high-school amateurs just out of band class and learning to play popular music from charts. It would be great to hear some contemporary jazz masters collaborate on Pink Floyd's music, since so much of it lends itself to the form. Unfortunately, this is anything but that.
2020 collection. Jazzed up versions of some of John Lennon's most iconic tracks. Includes tracks by Curtis Stigers, Pink Turtle, Stephen Bennet, Joe Jackson, and more.
John di Martino is a jazz pianist, arranger and producer, based in New York City. He has been described as a "shape-shifter", for his creativity across musical genres. For this tribute to the King of Pop, John and his Romantic Jazz Trio perform some of Michael Jackson's best-loved songs.
2019 saw Led Zeppelin - the 70’s iconic rockband - celebrate the 50th anniversary of their debut album. That release - as well as all their subsequent albums - dazzled and litterally shook the world of music, and created a whole new direction in rock’n’roll. Their music is now being revisited by a band consisting of some of the most in demand players on the Danish and European jazz scene.
