Hailed by NPR as "one of the most talked-about names in contemporary jazz," trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire has proven himself an artist of rare ability and wide-ranging aesthetic interests on his previous Blue Note releases. With his expansive double album A Rift in Decorum: Live At The Village Vanguard, Akinmusire reaches a new pinnacle with his longtime pianist Sam Harris, bassist Harish Raghavan and drummer Justin Brown: they join a distinguished strata of jazz artists who’ve made live recordings at the hallowed New York City venue.

While it was captured over the course a single night, there’s a rich lifetime’s worth of music packed into The Iron Man: Live at Smoke. If it’s a slight overstatement to say that the album represents an autobiography in song, that’s only because 82-year-old jazz master Harold Mabern tells his story in every note that he plays. That’s as true of the melodies he’s been interpreting for more then half a century – as many of the tunes on The Iron Man are – as it is of the always inspired music that flows spontaneously from the great pianist’s fingers.

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard surprised fans on Wednesday with the release of a new live album featuring recordings from the band’s milestone shows at Red Rocks Amphitheatre. Entitled Live At Red Rocks ’22, the album includes a staggering 86 tracks from KGLW’s first-ever shows at the iconic Colorado venue, where they played three-hour marathon sets on October 10th and 11th and November 2nd, 2022.
