King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard surprised fans on Wednesday with the release of a new live album featuring recordings from the band’s milestone shows at Red Rocks Amphitheatre. Entitled Live At Red Rocks ’22, the album includes a staggering 86 tracks from KGLW’s first-ever shows at the iconic Colorado venue, where they played three-hour marathon sets on October 10th and 11th and November 2nd, 2022.

With the Posies' Jon Auer and Ken Stringfellow standing in with Alex Chilton, on Jody Stephens' recommendation, for the uninterested Andy Hummel and the deceased Chris Bell, the foursome run through a collection mostly drawn from #1 Record and Radio City. Chilton's in good voice throughout, the blend of sweetness and melancholia of the band's original days present and fine as ever. As a band, the quartet doesn't let the legacy down a whit, from "Don't Lie to Me" and its full passion to the bemused regret of "September Gurls." Everyone else gets at least one vocal turn as well, a nice way of signaling the group effort that went into the show. Stephens handles "Way Out West" and "For You," Auer sings Bell's solo single "I Am the Cosmos," while Stringfellow takes over on no less than three songs, "Back of a Car," "Daisy Glaze," and a smashing rip on "Feel." A few interesting surprises are thrown in along the way, though anyone familiar with Chilton's way around unexpected covers in performance won't be too taken off-guard. T. Rex's "Baby Strange" gets a straightforward take, glam sass fully intact and suiting the band perfectly, while Todd Rundgren's "Slut" closes out the set with a final appropriate blast. The Magnificat, written to celebrate Mary’s joy after the Annunciation, and the oldest Christmas Cantata of Bach (Weimar, 1713), overwhelming fresco of a Nativity, foundation of the world. With these masterful works, Johann-Sebastien Bach opens up for us the gates of what is sacred as well as to our own relationship with spirituality. These pieces, amongst the most beautiful ever composed, are no doubt the best way possible to open the Christmas period. Led here by the very young but nonetheless inspired Valentin Tournet who conducts his ensemble La Chapelle Harmonique. Valentin Tournet, founder and musical director of La Chapelle Harmonique, began the group in 2017. The ensemble includes a choir and a period instrument orchestra. His repertoire, principally centered on Bach, goes from the polyphony of the Renaissance to the baroque of the Age of Enlightenment.

John Fogerty will release 50 Year Trip: Live at Red Rocks as an album on Nov. 8, followed by an exclusive screening of this concert in movie theaters on Nov. 11. Fogerty describes the evening as a family affair. "I've played Red Rocks a number of times over the years and it's always magical," he said in a news release. "But this time, to play with both of my sons on this amazing stage, will certainly go down as one of the major highlights of my life." Recorded June 20, 2019, in Morrison, Colo., 50 Year Trip: Live at Red Rocks includes 17 solo and Creedence Clearwater Revival classics – along with a pair of key covers: "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" and "Susie Q," the latter of which became the only CCR Top 40 hit not written by Fogerty.

EMI’s prestigious ‘Great Recordings of the Century’ series has featured a host of celebrated conductors, singers and instrumental virtuosi. Why, you may think, should an issue pay tribute to a "mere" accompanist? However, as I pointed out recently when comparing two recordings by Hans Hotter of Schubert’s Winterreise, a perceptive accompanist can make all the difference. In that instance, the perspicacious accompanist whose contribution to one of the two versions made it a clear winner, was Gerald Moore, the musician celebrated here.

This is a dazzling recital, taped live at Carnegie Hall in November 2003–complete with applause. Lang Lang's virtuosity is almost frightening: the Liszt "Reminiscenses du Don Juan" is a showpiece when played "normally." Here, Lang plays it to its extremes, with soft passages amazingly soft and subtly delineated and the bigger moments heaven-thundering.
