New music for a new world from New Kingston: the Jamerican band is just starting its international ascent, despite its solid US-fan-base and a decade-long existence. The founding bricks were laid by Jamaican bass-player Courtney Panton who moved to New York with his family in the early 80ies and, about 20 years ago, enthused his sons to pick up and learn one or two or three of the many instruments he had accumulated in his house. The result is a home-grown band of four: while Daddy Panton naturally provides the bass, his eldest son Courtney Junior rocks the drums, Stephen plays guitar and "baby" Tahir hits the keys.

Two contrasting voices that work wonderfully well together lock in with an electrically-charged blend of confidence, teamwork, and pure musicianship. Add to this, the brilliantly sympathetic bassman Steve Whipple, whose driving yet subtle accompaniment brings just the right blend of rhythm and color needed to cast their exciting spell. The trio collaborates on arrangements of standards, folk songs and even an occasional pop tune - creating a fine-tuned set for a truly uncommon ensemble.

In January of 2014, Tim Bennett was the lead singer and main songwriter of a band called Whistler’s Father who had just recorded an album called, Highly Irregular. “I was unfamiliar with Americana as a music genre,” he explains. “That album was what I came to think Americana was all about; country, blues, folk, bluegrass and a little bit of rock.” Since then, Bennett has gone on to record two solo albums, Inevitable Discovery (2016) and now The View From Here which will release on August 11th. Straddling country rock, The View From Here employs the same musicians that Bennett met while working with Whistler’s Father. “That project took a year and a half,” said Bennett. “What I got from that experience was a great place to record, Custom Taylored Studios, and a great group of session musicians that I fondly refer to as ‘The Demolitionists’. These guys were pitched to me as today’s ‘Wrecking Crew’ and they have certainly lived up to that comparison.”

In conceiving this project, I wanted to focus on creating the material with very few ingredients; just improvising at the drums or piano or singing ideas into a voice recorder, focusing primarily on rhythm and melody. I want to see what other ingredients the players or singers would bring to the material.
