It was the conductor Wilhelm Furtwangler who first gave Gottlob Frick the nickname 'Der schwarzeste Bass'. This accolade has been picked up time and again, gone through various manifestations, and became a sort of trademark of the German bass Gottlob Frick. That said, the attribute 'black' is often applied to define the vocal range of a basso profundo's ability to produce sonorous deep notes. However, the definition of 'black bass' means far more than that: it applies primarily to the deep, dark timbre, the rich and sonorous sound and the lasting flexibility of the voice even in the deep registers, paired with strength, momentum, natural resonance and abundant expression in the entire vocal range.

A unique document of contemporary Dresden history lies safely preserved in the Deutsches Rundfunkarchiv: the recording of the Daphne premiere of 1950, also planned as a tribute 'In Memoriam Richard Strauss' for that friend and champion of the Dresden Staatskapelle and Staatsoper, who had died the previous year. The presence of this buried treasure was ample cause for celebration - until we listened to the recording. We originally considered the surviving Daphne tapes as unfit for release on account of its recording quality and acoustics, far removed from the sound ideal to which we had hitherto aspired.

Albert Lortzing (1801-1851) was a prolific composer of very tuneful German comic operas, of which "Zar und Zimmermann" is his generally acknowledged
masterpiece. Lortzing also wrote the libretto, based on literary sources, for this and his other operas mentioned below. The German genre, known as 'spieloper', grew out of the 'singspiel' tradition of which Mozart's "Abduction from the Seraglio" is the best known example. Though a cousin to the Italian 'opera buffa' and the French 'opera comique' and the Spanish 'zarzuela', the German equivalent never traveled outside the German-speaking world with the success its cousins enjoyed outside their home countries. But such works are still popular at home.

The stars of this recording of Der Freischütz are conductor Joseph Keilberth, the Chorus of Deutschen Oper Berlin, and the Berlin Philharmonic. The chorus sings with wonderfully full, warm tone and high spirits, creating vivid characterizations of the hunters, peasants, bridesmaids, and spirits that populate the opera. The Berlin Philharmonic performs with complete assurance and stylishness, beautifully capturing the atmosphere of the opera's widely diverse scenes, and Keilberth keeps the dramatic tension high. The leads are more than adequate, but not stellar. Rudolf Schock is a bland Max, and his voice lacks the sheen and resonance to give him a real heroic presence.
