Science rests on the twin pillars of experiment and theory. An experiment is more than mere collection of data. One should have a credible hypothesis to explain the mass of data. For example, Tycho Brahe, the Danish astronomer, had accumulated a large volume of data on the position of planets in the sky over many years of careful observation. Kepler analyzed this complex maze of data, and deduced three simple laws of planetary motion. Newton then introduced the hypothesis of attraction between two masses, inversely proportional to the square of the distance between the two, and showed that all three laws of motion followed as natural consequences of this hypothesis. This is the path taken by any scientific discovery.

This book introduces the variety of research skills necessary for integrated environmental science, which are applicable to atmospheric, oceanic, terrestrial, and biota studies. The surface environment of the earth is a complex system consisting of atmospheric, oceanic, and terrestrial regions as well as the biota therein, all of which interact with one another to various extents. The integration of research disciplines including earth science, biology, chemistry, physics, and social science is a core of environmental science.

This book recounts the reception of selected films about the Great War released between 1918 and 1938 in the USA and Great Britain. It discusses the role that popular cinema played in forming and reflecting public opinion about the War and its political and cultural aftermath in both countries. Although the centenary has produced a wide number of studies on the memorialisation of the Great War in Britain and to a lesser degree the USA, none of them focused on audience reception in relation to the Anglo-American ‘circulatory system’ of Trans-Atlantic culture.

This volume presents, among others, Adam Smith, Johann Heinrich von Thünen, and Alan Wilson. Each chapter combines factual biographical information about the ‘Great Mind,’ a description of their major contributions, and a discussion of the broader context of their work, as well as an assessment of its current relevance, scientific recognition, and policy impact. The book attempts to fill a gap in our knowledge and to respond to the growing interest in the formation and development of the field of regional science and its key influential figures.
