Aside from Roger Dean's iconic cover illustrations, Greenslade weren't like most prog brands of the 1970s. Keyboardist Dave Greenslade and bassist Tony Reeves formed the quartet in 1972 after leaving jazz-rock outfit Colosseum. Eschewing guitars, they hired Samurai's Dave Lawson as a second keyboardist, and former Manfred Mann drummer Andrew McCulloch (he also played on King Crimson's Lizard) . The band's approach utilized typical knotty, stop-and-start cadences, and key and tempo changes, but those are only a few elements in their complex soundscape. The rest of Greenslade's sound reflected a penchant for catchy melodies derived from pop, jazz, classical, and folk. Keyboardist Lawson spent years backing singers including Bing Crosby and Peggy Lee. Greenslade, Reeves, and McCulloch came up in the British blues and jump R&B bands of the early 1960s. The remastered albums in this box mark their four studio outings: 1973's Greenslade and Bedside Manners Are Extra, 1974's Spyglass Guest, and 1975's Time & Tide.

There is no doubt that Chic was disco's greatest band. Working in a heavily producer-dominated field, they were most definitely a band. By the time Chic appeared in the late '70s, disco was already heading toward mainstream saturation and an inevitable downfall. Chic bucked the trend by stripping disco's sound down to its basic elements. Specializing in stylish grooves with a uniquely organic sense of interplay, Chic's sound was anchored by the scratchy "chucking"-style rhythm guitar of Nile Rodgers, the indelible, widely imitated, and sometimes outright stolen basslines of Bernard Edwards, and the powerhouse drumming of Tony Thompson.

The 1970s were not kind to the Kinks. While the band had already transitioned gracefully from their mod-ish British Invasion origins (and the heavy production thumb of Shel Talmy) into something more adventurous and artful with 1968's The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society, that masterpiece's two iconic follow-ups (Arthur and Lola) found Ray Davies' weird twin penchants for acidic lyricism and music hall song structures becoming more and more dominant in the group's sound. By the time the 1971 soundtrack to Percy rolled around, U.S. audiences had all but forgotten about the band, who soon found themselves facing the same fate in their native England.

Few figures in 20th century American music had as pervasive an influence as David Crosby. As a founding member of the Byrds, he shaped the ringing sound of 1960s folk-rock and pioneered trippy psychedelia, yet his greatest fame came as part of Crosby, Stills & Nash, a supergroup he formed with Stephen Stills and Graham Nash that helped usher in the mature, reflective '70s.

A Chicago-based vocalist whose music was steeped in Southern gospel and deep soul, Otis Clay never had a major pop hit, but he was a periodic visitor to the R&B charts and an enduring presence in the world of blues and vintage soul, while also enjoying a long career in spiritual music. Clay was born on February 11, 1942 in Waxhaw, Mississippi, where the church was a vital part of his family's life. In 1953, Clay's family moved to Muncie, Indiana, where he began performing with a local gospel group. In 1957, Clay and his family relocated to Chicago, where he joined the Golden Jubilaires, the first of many gospel groups he would work with in the Windy City.
