Three years after his last recording, Grigory Sokolov returns with a double album of live recordings from his triumphant European 2019-20 tour. Focusing on the early (Piano Sonata No. 3) and late Beethoven sonatas (Piano Sonatas Nos. 27 & 32) as well as Brahms's autumnal piano pieces opp. 118 & 119, this is a showcase of the Russian pianist's "stunning technique" (The Telegraph).
In his new live recital Grigory Sokolov brings his unmatched musicianship and command of the piano to the music of Purcell and Mozart, followed by encores which are far more than celebratory extras. This is music-making to be treasured and another indispensable addition to the catalogue.
Grigory Sokolov releases his latest live album of works by Purcell and Mozart. The pianist dedicated his entire 2022/23 season to performances of the two composers. Here he brilliantly unites Purcell’s grounds (ground bass lines), tunes and dances with Mozart’s piano works from the Viennesse Classical period, revealing their shared streaks of charm and melancholy.
With his very own “mysterious seductive power and legendary elegance” (Le Monde), Claudio Abbado opened for the last time the LUCERNE FESTIVAL in the summer of 2013. Only a few months later, the world had to bid farewell to a monumental artist, humanist, great conductor and orchestra founder. Even in the concert itself, documented here, lived a moment of farewell, as the three great works performed tell of the transience of life. The centerpiece of the Eroica is the funeral march revealing “abysses of shattering dimension” - an “intense experience” (Neue Zürcher Zeitung). This record, the last audio-visual documentation of his work, captures once again the extraordinary atmosphere of “vibrant emotionality” that always emerged when Abbado created music with his “orchestra of friends”.
The soloists of the Simón Bolivar Orchestra of Venezuela have invited harpsichordist Bruno Procopio to conduct a programme dedicated entirely to Jean-Philippe Rameau. Procopio has also recorded the 'Pièces de clavecin en concerts' and first performed this all-Rameau programme at the Simón Bolivar Concert Hall in 2012. Discovering French Baroque music was a new departure for the Venezuelan musicians who responded with characteristic enthusiasm and verve to this dance-related suite, albeit working as a smaller group than usual. Maestro José Antonio Abreu, founder of El Sistema is also an acclaimed harpsichorist but as yet there are no period instrument orchestras in Venezuela.
The complete recordings on Nave of legendary Russian pianist Grigory Sokolov have now been collected into this specially-priced 10CD set. Included are critically acclaimed recordings of music by Bach, Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms, Chopin, Prokofiev, Scriabin and Rachmaninov. Personnel: Grigory Sokolov (piano)
