Grouper Alien

The first Grouper album in 4 years finds Liz Harris stripped of FX, pairing her vocals with skeletal piano gestures in beautifully pregnant space. For anyone familiar with the miasmic fuzz of Grouper’s previous releases, the relative clarity is quietly shocking in effect, revealing her songs and sound at their most vulnerable, and, in the process, locating a newfound strength in fragility.

The 12th full-length by Pacific Northwest artist Liz Harris aka Grouper is a collection of songs spanning 15 years. She characterizes Shade as an album about respite, and the coast, poetically and literally. How we frame ourselves in a landscape, how in turn it frames ourselves; memories and experiences carried forward mapping our connection to place.

In 1979, the U.S. Customs Service reported that 87% of all marijuana seizures in the U.S. were made in the South Florida area. Due to the region's 5,000 miles of coast and coastal waterways and close proximity to the Caribbean and Latin America, South Florida was a pot smuggler's paradise. In sharp contrast to the brazenly violent cocaine cowboys of the 1980s, Miami's marijuana smugglers were cooler, calmer, and for the most part, nonviolent. Square Grouper paints a vivid portrait of Miami's pot smuggling culture in the 1970s and 1980s through three of the city's most colorful stories.

Predators have been using our planet for thousands of years as a training ground for their hunter-warriors. Aztec temples were the focii of this training,
and Aliens were used as prey. The Aztec people saw the Predators as gods, and built many of their monuments for these hunters. The movie's choice of Aztecs seems strange, since their civilization only dates back a century before Columbus. If the producers wanted something old, why not the Olmecs, whose ancient civilization was the progenitor of later Meso-American empires? I guess Aztecs are just cooler.

Not the greatest of quality but certainly readable and well worth the effort for those that collect or like this sort of thing [ me :D ]
