Frank DeVol was never quite a household name, but for a few years in the 1960s, his name came into millions of American households every week, sometimes more than once each week. As a bandleader and arranger, he was one of the busiest working musicians of the '50s and '60s, and as a composer, he wrote more than 50 movie scores but it was his theme music for series such as My Three Sons and The Brady Bunch by which he came into our homes and pop culture consciousness.

Digitally remastered 3 CD set containing three classic albums from the Canadian Rock veterans: Wheatfield Soul (1969), Canned Wheat (1969) and Shared The Land (1970). What makes Wheatfield Soul so sought after is inventive themes that found their way onto later albums. 'These Eyes' remains timeless; it is the song that stands out as the masterpiece on this creative album. Canned Wheat introduced several of the bands most remembered songs and still sounds incredibly fresh, a product from the days of Classic Rock. Recorded in the aftermath of Randy Bachman's departure, Share The Land was a better album than anyone expected. It was the biggest selling original album in their career. Burton Cummings is in excellent voice and the new double lead guitar team of Kurt Winter and Greg Leskiw gave the band a greater range than they had before.

While the Guess Who did have several hits in America, they were superstars in their home country of Canada during the 1960s and early '70s. However, further American success eluded the Guess Who until the 1969 Top Ten hit "These Eyes"; the recording session for the accompanying album, "Wheatfield Soul", was paid for by producer Jack Richardson, who mortgaged his house to do so. "Canned Wheat" produced three Top 40 singles later that year. This Dutton Vocalion's reissue combines both these albums, remastered from the Original Master tapes by Michael J. Dutton.

The set is built around the A and B sides of singles, with album cuts salted in between. This is effective in charting the band's progression from melodic popsters to hard rockers and back to the pop-inflected music that closed out their career. The highlights are scattered throughout – "American Woman," of course; "Rain Dance," with its unnerving echoes of American massacres, the funky, improvised live "Truckin' Off Across the Sky," even the goofy "Clap for the Wolfman," which came when the Guess Who were all but finished. The Ultimate Collection works well as an introduction to the Guess Who, but will not gratify anyone with more than a basic need to know. On a sonic level, the set sounds good, however.

Though influenced by the British Invasion, The Guess Who were purely Canadian rockers. The band scored a string of Top Ten hits in the late ’60s and early ’70s, including the psychedelic-romantic smash “These Eyes” and the riff-rocking anthem “American Woman”. The band was a huge success in the States and even performed at President Nixon’s inaugural ball (with the acerbic “American Woman” conspicuously omitted from the set list). Burton Cummings’ throaty baritone vocals and guitarist Randy Bachman’s theatrical riffs gave the band their versatile sound – and their rocking classics sound as vital today as they did when they were first released. This Dutton Vocalion’s reissue combines a pair albums from 1970 “American Woman” and “Share The Land”, remastered from the Original Master tapes by Michael J. Dutton.
