Composer, keyboardist, producer Wayne Horvitz’s new project celebrates American poet Richard Hugo (1923-1982), and is performed by a hugely talented septet combining his working ensembles Sweeter Than the Day and Gravitas Quartet. Hugo, a Seattle native, spent years rambling throughout the Northwest; that and his love of music (jazz in particular) inspired Horvitz’s interpretations of 11 Hugo poems, which are included in the booklet along with beautiful photos of places Hugo wrote about. Horvitz’s instrumental songs, which reflect Hugo’s love of nature as well as his frequent bouts of depression and loneliness, combine elements of the blues, jazz, folk and contemporary classical and feature deeply felt improvisations by the whole band. Audiophile production enhances the impact.

An eminent ambassador of the ‘French touch’ in jazz and winner of many awards (Django-Reinhardt, Victoires du Jazz, Django d’Or, SACEM jazz awards) – Baptiste Trotignon has been composing for symphony orchestras and classical musicians for several years. The music on this album is not ‘symphonic jazz’, says Trotignon, ‘but you can hear the sounds of the Afro-American musical language, whether in the harmonies or in the very motoric rhythms that are always in motion (dances, toccatas, grooves)’.

The debut album from accomplished and highly respected young jazz multi-instrumentalist Julius Rodriguez. Enrolled at Manhattan School of Music's pre-college division at age 12, he later went on to study at The Julliard School after which he became a member of Onyx Collective - a popular NYC jazz group who has collaborated with members of the Wu Tang Clan and toured with ASAP Rocky.

The unique instrumentation of the three works in this album was pioneered by the innovative Lou Harrison, whose 1959 concerto encapsulates his culturally wide-ranging aesthetic. More conventional instruments work alongside calibrated extras such as wash tubs and flowerpots in a work of colour, languorous elegance and kinetic energy.

Though he has overcome many obstacles and achieved much in the pursuit of his musical career, trumpeter Pete Rodriguez regularly feels that he needs to dodge others’ assumptions about him and truly introduce himself…
