"All my works share a certain, very human, point of departure: it is often an event, or maybe an experience that acts as a window on our life and which spurs on my instinct and conscience, forcing me as both a musician and a person to document and bear witness." This claim by Luigi Nono was fulfilled in 1960. His friend Karl Amadeus Hartmann confirmed with the words: "Nono is on the offensive, and his language is that of fire", adding that this is the very reason that Nono the man and Nono the artist created this oeuvre.

"Music-life (or life-music, which is the same thing)": thus wrote the young Nono to Karl Amadeus Hartmann in 1953. That same year he wrote to Hermann Scherchen about "the very beautiful reality of our strong unity in life and in music." This desire for unity of art and life, which was still possible - indeed, perhaps necessary - after the war, found an ideal correspondence in Federico Garcia Lorca and his "barraca." It was this simple stage on a truck with which Lorca traveled across the country for a time; he wrote and staged plays for it on behalf of the young Spanish republic.
…in Der rote Mantel the obvious, "audible" political intentions are very much in the background; there are no choral, rhythmic slogans or anything similar. Nono's ballet on the "erotic hallelujah" is rather a bizarre kind of chamber play that seeks intensifications of Garcia Lorca's intangible, poetic images. And yet at the same time, of course, it is an homage to Garcia Lorca, who was murdered by the Falangists.

As Peachfuzz said, it seems there is a Hindemith revival on Avaxhome… Maybe i'm a bit guilty for that :)

If you love late Hindemith you will love this work, but if all you know is the earlier ebullience, there may be a little bit here to get used to. The performance is superb, all that one could hope for, and the sound is also excellent, the balance between organ and orchestra absolutely exemplary. Like many phase accurate organ recordings, it will open up nicely in your Dolby Surround decoder, although it is, of course, a two channel recording. This is certainly the finest version of the organ sonatas I’ve heard. The Flentrop organ is clear with the voices independently audible, yet when necessary the sound has mass and depth.

Nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for "Best Opera Recording", Olivier Messiaen's St. Francis of Assisi, the grandest grand opera since Wagner's Parsifal, came into being in 1983, during the first Reagan Administration, when Men at Work topped the pop charts. Somehow, it has already acquired a historical aura, as if it were an antiquity whose head and paws are only now emerging from the sand. José van Dam, who created the demanding title role in 1983, is a powerful presence in this live recording from the 1998 Salzburg Festival, and Dawn Upshaw―the lone female soloist in this baritone-dominated work―is appropriately radiant as the Angel. Conducted by Kent Nagano, who studied the score with the composer, this can be recommended to fans of Messiaen or to anyone interested in modern opera as a truly definitive recording.
