The founding principle of the Swiss ensemble CHAARTS is to bring together a group of individual musicians from a variety of backgrounds - but from high-class orchestras and ensembles: Philharmonic from Vienna and Berlin, Tonhalle from Zurich, Bavarian Radio, Mahler Chamber Orchestra, Quator Galatea, Julia Fisch Quartet, Stradivari Quartet etc. - and to make music without a conductor. Swiss violinist Sebastian Bohren brought together CHAARTS for this second album, bringing them together for a very eclectic program. To begin: Mendelssohn's violin concerto … but not the one we believe! It is the First Concerto - the famous, in E minor, is actually the second - written by the very young composer, then fourteen years old, at the time of his symphonies for strings. In particular one will notice the delicious last movement, rather gypsy in spirit.

Born in Ukraine, Thomas de Hartmann (1885–1956), a student of both Arensky and Taneyev, achieved fame as a composer in Russia in the early 1900s, and his concert music was later played by some of the major musicians of the day, primarily in Paris. Since his death, he has been remembered mainly for his association with the Caucasian mystic G. I. Gurdjieff, whom he met in 1916, and his output for the concert hall has fallen into obscurity. The four works receiving their first recordings here reveal a major late-Romantic voice, downstream from Tchaikovsky, contemporary with Rachmaninov, and alert to the discoveries of Stravinsky and Prokofiev

With a title like Time & Eternity and graphics featuring the disembodied head of violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaja, you know you're in for an ambitious program. Kopatchinskaja's albums have been getting increasingly experimental as her career has developed, and this one is at no time boring, whatever you may think of the overall concept. Sample Crux, by Lubos Fiser, for violin, timpani, and bells, with the timpani pounding away as a kind of avatar of dread. This said the structure of the program is not quite as unconventional as it may at first appear to be.
