Is it too much to announce yet another CD world premiere for a singer with such a vast discography as Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau (1925-2012)? No, it truly is not. That is because the undoubtedly most important singer alongside Maria Callas and Enrico Caruso of the twentieth century (according to Die Welt newspaper) had originally forbidden a release of this live recording. The most likely reason is that this recording made on February 26, 1989 in the Deutsche Oper in Düsseldorf and featuring his fourth wife, soprano Julia Varady (born in 1941) included songs that the baritone, who was to retire from active performance in 1992, planned to record in the studio.

Capriccio continues to celebrate its 40th anniversary with this retrospective of some of the greatest instrumental recordings in its catalogue. Keyboard mavens include Ton Koopman, performing J.S. Bach; the great Christine Schornsheim, performing concertos by Bach’s sons; and Tzimon Barto, combining his muscular frame with a gentle touch in Brahms. Leading wind and brass players are represented by Burkhard Glaetzner (oboe), Eckart Haupt (flute) and Reinhold Friedrich (trumpet) in music by masters of the Baroque and Classical periods. And there are contributions from the ever-reliable Petersen Quartet, the inquisitive Linos Ensemble (whose exploration of new repertoire represents a Capriccio hallmark), and incomparable solo performers Tabea Zimmermann and Vladimir Spivakov with highlights for the upper strings. Altogether, a generous and enticing programme that is truly representative of the Capriccio label.

This new release from Lilianna Zalesinska and Jolanta Pszczolkowska-Pawlik is a showcase of songs by Polish composer Piotr Maszynski. Mezzosoprano Liliana Zalesinska graduated with distinction from Universitat fur Musik und darstellende Kunst in Vienna. As a chamber musician, she participated in a special program of Udo Reinemann’s, dedicated to song interpretation, where she worked with such artists as Peter Schreier, Felicity Lott, Edith Wiens, and Hartmut Holl. She has taken part in the stagings of contemporary works at such stages as the Konzerthaus in Vienna and at the SIMN Festival in Romania, among others.

The breadth of clarinetist Sabine Meyer's repertoire is matched by her dedication to collaborations with other, equally skilled musicians. She received her first music lessons from her father, clarinetist Karl Meyer, and then went on to study with Otto Hermann in Stuttgart and Hans Deinzer in Hannover. She was 16 when she made her professional debut. She joined Munich's Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra for a time, then in 1982, Herbert von Karajan created something of an international stir by appointing her as solo clarinetist for the Berlin Philharmonic, going against the orchestra's tradition of not admitting female musicians.
