It's difficult for anyone who has heard them not to like – or even love – the Tremeloes. They were one of the more prodigiously talented British pop/rock bands of the 1960s, and they threw that talent into the making of amazingly catchy and well-crafted singles that lit up the charts and radio on both sides of the Atlantic for four years running, from 1966 through 1970. Yet, the Tremeloes are also one of the least-known and least-respected of 1960s English bands. The precise reason for the lack of respect is difficult to pin down, except perhaps that their timing was out, as far as making the most of their success. They generally didn't write their own material, and they cut their best singles long after the British Invasion (and the mystique surrounding the bands that were part of it) had ended. And, yet, ironically, the Tremeloes are also one of the longest surviving English rock & roll bands, playing regularly more than 40 years after the group's founding…

On "It's About Time", the first solo disc from Greg Chaisson, the Badlands bassist goes back to his roots and digs deep into a set of 12 outstanding killer blues/rock heavy guitar trax with a way-kool 70's power trio vibe. Greg Chaisson is best known for playing bass in the rather awesome Badlands (featuring Jake E. Lee & Ray Gillen), however he has also laid down the "low-end bottom kool" on discs by Blindside Blues Band, Craig Erickson, Darrell Mansfield, Die Happy & Surgical Steel, to name a few. "It's About Time" finds the bad-ass bassist paying tribute to his musical roots and heroes of the 70's. He also has found his "voice" and handles the lead vocals with a raw, gutsy, bluesy authority on songs that count.

As a concept it’s a revelation – the original versions of (mostly) familiar songs that went on to become big hits by other artists. Familiarity is turned on its head as mental receptors attuned to the better-known hit versions – the received wisdom, if you like – are challenged for attention by the performers who made the original recordings to little or no acclaim. It’s a parallel universe where the reassuringly familiar landscape is a beautiful illusion.

The acoustic solo guitar album from Pat Metheny called “What’s It All About” features classic tunes from songwriters like Paul Simon, Lennon & McCartney, Burt Bacharach, and Henry Mancini. Pat describes it like this: “I wanted to record some of the music that was on my radar before I ever wrote a note of my own, or in a few cases, even before I played an instrument. Every one of these tunes has something going on that is just hip on a musical level, no matter how you cut it. They have all stuck with me over the years.”

The Poodles are back. One of the big draws, taking that the execution and performances are top notch as a given, is that the song selection is as wonderful as it is eclectic. It’s a brave album as far as song choices go which may divide some fans like me who find modern Pop music and especially processed digital DJ music pretty much an anathema

Way before hook-smart pop/R&B ditties like "When the Going Gets Tough" and "Get Outta My Dreams, Get Into My Car" established Billy Ocean as a world-wide '80s radio icon, the singer was belting out '60s-laden soul workouts and ballads that mainly stuck a chord with U.K. audiences. This youthful debut outing boasts a nice balance of slow and fast numbers, and finds Ocean putting an abundance of energy into each track (at times perhaps a bit over-exerted). And though his style may not be as developed as on his '80s albums, there's no lack of vigor or enthusiasm.
