On her new album, pianist Hélène Grimaud explores the rich universe of German Romanticism, combining Robert Schumann's Kreisleriana op. 16 with Brahms' Intermezzi op. 117 and Lieder und Gesängen op. 32. Grimaud has known Schumann's Kreisleriana for most of her life. "You can spend a lifetime with a piece like this and always discover something new," the pianist says. Her special relationship with the German Romantics is evident on her album "For Clara," which focuses not only on the pianist's relationship with the music of Robert Schumann and his protégé Brahms, but in particular on the two composers' connection to Clara Schumann.

New Naïve signing baritone Stéphane Degout has already featured as soloist with the internationally renowned choral group Accentus on Brahms' German Requiem and Fauré's Requiem. The programme on his solo debut CD is a selection of mélodies by various French composers, Debussy, Ravel, Duparc, Saint-Saëns, Chabrier, and Reynaldo Hahn. Stéphane Degout first met pianist Hélène Lucas when he entered the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Lyon in 1995.

Both Benjamin Britten and his teacher Frank Bridge at one point owned the Giussani viola played by Hélène Clément on this album, which features pieces the two composers wrote for the instrument. The most substantial work here, Britten’s Lachrymae, is a series of pensive variations on a theme by John Dowland and is performed evocatively by Clément. In the Elegy, also by Britten, the Giussani viola’s special eloquence is evident in its deep tonal resonance and vivid responsiveness to Clément’s pizzicatos. Mezzo-soprano Sarah Connolly’s stirring performance of Bridge’s Three Songs is another highlight, as is the vein of aching sadness Clément finds in another of Bridge’s works, There Is a Willow Grows Aslant a Brook.
