Gable is Giovanni Severa, a pilot in the Italian Air Force. He meets Angela (Hayes), an aristocratic daughter of a prince (Stone). Her father opposes their romance but they steal moments together anyway. When Giovanni goes off to fight in the 1914-1918 war, Angela waits for him so they can get married. When she learns he has died in combat, she knows she will never love again and joins a convent.
The film is based on a true incident in Le Mans, France in 1933 called the Papin murder case, where two sisters brutally murdered their employer and her daughter. The murder shocked the country, and there was much speculation about the sisters, including allegations that they were having an incestous lesbian affair with each other. The Papin case was also the subject of The Maids, a play by Jean Genet written in 1949 that was adapted into a film in 1974 by Christopher Miles. It starred Glenda Jackson and Susannah York as the maids, and Vivien Merchant as their employer.
American heiress Pearl Saunders marries Lord George Grayston but later sees him embracing his lover on their wedding day. She has his title and he has her money; thereafter they are rarely seen together. Pearl is accepted by the British aristocracy and is presented at court, but creates a scandal by wearing black. She encourages her younger sister, Bessie, who idolizes her, to respond to the attentions of Lord Harry Bleane despite Bessie preferring American Fleming Harvey.
Famed author Kenneth Bixby is on a tour of the US with his assistant Anne Rogers to promote his latest novel, Miriam. Their lives get more complicated while in Cleveland when Ken receives a visit from an old flame, the former Julie Clochessy now married Julie Wilson, the two who have not seen each other in years since their college days. Julie is still infatuated with Ken, especially as she is sure that she is the inspiration for the tragic heroine, Miriam. Julie feels she has to see Ken in light of that and the promise they made to each other in college that they would someday get married, which is more difficult now that she is Mrs. Harvey Wilson.
