Watch What You're Doing is the debut recording of Herlin Riley, the 42-year-old master New Orleans drummer who spent five years with Ahmad Jamal, six years with the Wynton Marsalis Quintet and Septet, and has been the drummer-of-choice of Wynton Marsalis' Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra for the past decade. Joined by a choice ensemble of LCJO colleagues, trumpeter Ryan Kisor, trombonist Wycliffe Gordon, saxist Victor Goines, pianist Farid Barron and bassist Rodney Whitaker, Riley conjures a profound meditation on the rhythmic timeline befitting his griotic status as an improviser who has lived the tradition from the inside-out.

For all of the hard rhythmic driving intensity of New Direction, Riley is not one of those drummers who needs to blast away to captivate listeners and to remain engaged. In these powerful arrangements, you can discern Riley’s fascination with complex rhythm cycles, where each man’s instrument seemingly functions as a direct extension of the drummer, by layering contrasting metric accents one upon another with varying degrees of intensity, often as a prelude to some vigorous theme and variation by this most melodic of drummers.

The 24 selections on this Classics CD (their third Charles Brown release) were all recorded by Johnny Moore's Three Blazers, a trio consisting of guitarist Moore, bassist Eddie Williams, and the real star, pianist-vocalist Charles Brown. The final three numbers add Moore's brother, Oscar Moore (formerly with the Nat King Cole Trio), on second guitar. Unlike with their earlier pre-"Driftin' Blues" material, the emphasis is generally on slower tempos with Brown having a vocal on every selection. Most notable is the hit version of "Merry Christmas Baby"; other highlights include "Was I to Blame for Falling in Love With You," "Huggin' Bug," "St. Louis Blues," "Juke Box Lil," and "New Orleans Blues."
