During the summer of 1883 Richard Strauss composed two large-format orchestral works in traditional genres, the lengthy Concert Overture in C minor and the Symphony in F minor, op.12, both of them also with the same instruments. The overture is anything but a secondary effort; it also cannot be understood as a simple “work of his youth”. Although the key and the opening stance of the Overture clearly point to Beethoven’s Coriolan Overture, the subliminal irritations, frictions, surprises, and saliencies already present here become even much more apparent in the Symphony.

Alexander Zemlinsky composed his Lyric Symphony, Op. 18 for soprano, baritone and orchestra during his time as musical director of the New German Theatre in Prague, where he had moved in 1911 from Vienna. It was generally regarded as his corresponding equivalent to Mahler’s Lied von der Erde and is based on Nobel Prize laureate and most important representative of modern Indian literature Rabindranath Tagore. The work is combined with the befriended and three years older "phantasmogorist" Franz Schreker’s Prelude to a Drama, which is a version of the overture of his Die Gezeichneten. It might be considered symptomatic for the most notable characteristic of Schreker’s music: the dominance of chordal sounds over the melodic element.

The Brandenburg Concertos (BWV 1046–1051) by Johann Sebastian Bach are a collection of six instrumental works presented by Bach to Christian Ludwig, Margrave of Brandenburg-Schwedt, in 1721 (though probably composed earlier). The original French title is Six Concerts Avec plusieurs instruments, meaning "Six Concertos for several instruments". Some of the pieces feature several solo instruments in combination. They are widely regarded as some of the greatest orchestral compositions of the Baroque era.

During the eighteenth century an oratorio was the dramatic setting of an action that was mostly of sacred character and was represented by several persons as well as by a choir and an orchestra. Various plot elements – even dramatic ones – determined the character of the particular composition. This also applies to the present Christmas Oratorio, which was pieced together in this form not by Telemann himself but for this new pre- sentation as a so-called pasticcio, a form that enjoyed popularity already in the eighteenth century.

The Musical Offering (German: Musikalisches Opfer or Das Musikalische Opfer), BWV 1079, is a collection of keyboard canons and fugues and other pieces of music by Johann Sebastian Bach, all based on a single musical theme given to him by Frederick the Great (King Frederick II of Prussia), to whom they are dedicated. They were published in September 1747. The Ricercar a 6, a six-voice fugue which is regarded as the high point of the entire work, was put forward by the musicologist Charles Rosen as the most significant piano composition in history (partly because it is one of the first). This ricercar is also occasionally called the Prussian Fugue, a name used by Bach himself.

Cpo has finally found the composer who should actually be their house composer: Christian Westerhoff from Osnabrück. This Mozart contemporary was the son of an Osnabrück town musician and very soon found a post as a violinist and double bassist at the closest court chapel. On this recording of orchestral works the young clarinettist Sebastian Manz performs alongside Albrecht Holder on bassoon. They are accompanied by the Osnabrück Symphony Orchestra.

Andreas Romberg numbers among music history’s forgotten composers. He was celebrated as a violin virtuoso and a composer, but this did not keep him from falling through the safety net into historiographical obscurity with its often-unjust judgments. We are recording his symphonies over time in the hope that he will receive more attention as a composer. Bonn, Hamburg, and Gotha were his career stations. In 1793, while still in Bonn, he wrote his Messiah, and in 1800 he also performed it in Hamburg, his new place of work. He without doubt regarded it as his favorite and main work, and over the years he repeatedly revised it. klassik-heute. com in April 2008: »Some marvelously atmospheric delights that do not fade away after a single hearing – of which I have been happy to convince myself in what so far have been three complete ‘sessions.’«
