Aki Takase, the Berlin-based pianist, is one of the great personalities of modern jazz. Moments of freedom, form and humour characterize this stylistically versatile avant-gardist, the stubborn virtuoso who toys with jazz traditions. In the year of her 70th birthday, Aki Takase was honoured with The Berlin Jazz Prize. Recorded over two days at the Sendesaal Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg, the album includes some pieces captured live during the award ceremony, and some recorded in a studio setting in the same historic room.

This look at the work and life of block-print artist Katsushika Hokusai (1740-1849) begins with the political context of the Edo shogunate at the time of his birth: peasants driven off their land come to the city; a merchant class is emerging; samurais' power wanes. Hokusai lives in poverty, apprenticed as a printmaker, studying under the best artists of the day, especially Korin. Hokusai's unique style strives for realism. The camera slowly pans Hokusai's art: we see prints popular with merchants and commoners, particularly his caricatures; his subjects are often people at work. Late in life, political turmoil becomes his subject.

More than 150 years after his death, Katsushika Hokusai remains one of Japan's most well-known artists around the world. His most popular work, 36 Views of Mount Fuji, shows the iconic mountain from multiple perspectives. Hokusai created the illustrations when he was in his seventies.
His late blooming was spectacular – it was only in his 70s that he made his most celebrated print series, 36 Views of Mount Fuji, including the famous Great Wave, an image that subsequently swept over the world. "Until the age of 70," he once wrote "nothing that I drew was worthy of notice." The 46 prints of the Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji ensured his fame. In Buddhist and Daoist tradition, Hokusai's obsession with Mount Fuji was part of his yearning after artistic immortality.
This program delves into the mysteries surrounding the woodblock prints. What drove the artist to begin them late in life? And what was it about the series that dazzled the people of his era? The answers reveal truths about the artist, his work, and his times.
