Tracks from UK Ember first released 1962-1974. Throughout the Sixties and into the Seventies, Jeffrey Kruger's enterprising ember label released a steady stream of singles, EP's and albums by female artists, both soloist and girl groups. Actually, he didn't get off to the best of starts - Rock-Olga's "My Dixieland Doll" (Ember EMBS 105, 1960), is one of the worst records this writer has ever heard - but he went on to amass a strong roster of female vocalists including some who made their reputation in other fields but who nevertheless made good records for ember. Here we present a cross-section of their recordings, beat, ballads and a touch of the blues!

"Call on Me" is the 3rd album by the R&B singer Evelyn "Champagne" King, released on RCA Records in 1980. It was produced by Theodore Life and George Tindley. The album peaked at #58 on the R&B albums chart. It also reached #124 on the Billboard 200. It produced the single "Let's Get Funky Tonight". In addition to the eight songs that appeared on the original 1980 LP, the expanded edition of "Call on Me" offers five bonus tracks: the 12” version of “Let’s Get Funky Tonight” and four rarities from the ultra-obscure "Sweet Delight" LP.

Maybe the only album we've ever seen from Henny Vonk – a jazz singer with a Dutch name, but a style here that's right up there with some of the hipper American singers of the period – especially those who know how to move on the hipper currents of the spectrum! At some level, Henny's got a way of stretching out her words while inflecting them, with a vibe that's reminiscent of Sheila Jordan – but overall, Vonk's maybe a straighter jazz singer, too – but one with a nicely sensitive vibe, as her vocals are balanced out with the introspective piano work of Rov Van Den Broeck. The rhythm duo adds a nice current of soul from time to time – with Clint Houston on bass and Billy Higgins on drums – and many cuts have new lyrics written for the album.
