Biber's Mystery (or Rosary) Sonatas were originally written to be played during Mass in Salzburg. Set to be recorded in early 2015 and released shortly after by Channel Classics, Rachel will tour a programme of half of the sonatas through 2014/2015 and 2015/2016. Depicting the main stories in the life of Christ, the sonatas are extremely evocative and could be performed in a sacred space using the Stations of the Cross, and/ or include suitable lighting to enhance the performance.

Bohemian Catholic composer Heinrich Biber was arguably the most distinguished 17th century composer of instrumental music for the church. His output was not extensive but it was extraordinary, especially his best-known opus, The Rosary Sonatas of the 1670s. Depicting the 15 mysteries of the rosary, these works are remarkable for their vivid programmatic nature, the use of extended techniques such as scordatura (retuning of the violin strings), and virtuostic writing (Biber himself was an accomplished violinist).

Biber's 'Rosary Sonatas' for violin and basso continuo stand alone in the violin literature and in music history, offering a unique combination of programmatic material and the use of scordatura. The cycle consists of fifteen sonatas for violin and basso continuo, and a closing Passacaglia for solo violin, composed c.1687. Through the copper engravings inserted at the head of each sonata in the manuscript depicting key moments in the lives of Christ and the Virgin Mary, the music has become associated with the Catholic Mysteries of the Rosary.

Organist Mark Williams and the men of Cantores in Ecclesia, conducted by Dean Applegate, present a sacred music program alternating choir with organ, featuring the Bond organ of Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Portland, Oregon. Mark Williams was born in Lancashire in England and sang as a boy at Manchester Cathedral before going on to hold the Organ Scholarship and an academic scholarship at Trinity College Cambridge. In 2000 at the age of 21, he was appointed Assistant Sub-Organist of St. Paul’s Cathedral in London and Director of Music at St. Paul’s Cathedral School. He relinquished both posts in April of 2006 in order to pursue his rapidly growing freelance career. The subjects which the icons refer to can be divided into two general types: picture icons (for example saints portraits, Mother of God of the Sign, Christ Pantocrator) and scenic subject icons. Some of these subjects also inspired the great musicians’ magnum opus.

Following their award-winning recording of the Striggio 40-part Mass, I Fagiolini has returned with even more exquisite baroque music from the extraordinary year of 1612. The centerpiece is the crowning glory of the late Renaissance - Gabrieli’s Magnificat for a massive seven choirs - a work never before recorded as the music for five of the choirs has been lost. Conductor Robert Hollingworth and Renaissance scholar Hugh Keyte have taken the enormous task of reconstructing parts for the missing choirs. The album presents the best works of the greatest composers of the time in the form of a service of Vespers.
