Jazz vocalist Shirley Crabbe sings songs that speak to the heart. As a teenager, Shirley was inspired by a performance of Ella Fitzgerald singing the song "A Tisket, A Tasket" in an old Abbot and Costello movie. “I’ve always had a passion for singing, but when I heard Ella sing, I knew that “jazz singing” was what I really wanted to do.”

Known to Americans most for her belting rendition of the theme to Goldfinger, the 1964 edition in the James Bond series (as well as 1971's Diamonds Are Forever and 1979's Moonraker), Shirley Bassey was one of the most popular female vocalists in Britain during the last half of the 20th century. Known as "Bassey the Belter" and also the "Tigress of Tiger Bay," her early career in touring shows and cabaret brought her a recording contract with Philips by the late '50s. After reaching the top of the British charts in 1959 with "As I Love You" and later "Reach for the Stars/Climb Every Mountain," Bassey was tapped to sing the theme song to the third James Bond vehicle. Her voice, brassy and sexy, conveyed the James Bond myth perfectly, and the song became a big hit in America. Though later chart placings in the U.S. were few, she continued to do well in Great Britain, France, and the Netherlands into the mid-'70s.

You Won't Forget Me is a 1991 studio album by Shirley Horn. Miles Davis made his last appearance as a sideman on this album. You Won't Forget Me was the first jazz number 1 album in Horn's career. Shirley Horn made her recording debut in the early 1960s then returned home to Washington, D.C., to raise a family. She came back to the studio in the late '70s and early '80s, but it wasn't until this 1991 recording–her third Verve release–that she finally received the recognition she was due. You Won't Forget Me features Horn's trio of bassist Charles Ables and drummer Steve Williams, plus guest soloists Miles Davis, Wynton Marsalis, Branford Marsalis, Toots Thielemans, and fellow D.C. legend Buck Hill. The album projects a warm musical vision that elevates lyrical storytelling over fancy scatting. Here, maturity enhances rather than diminishes romantic longing.

During the 1960's, Shirley Scott's Impulse albums were often split between big band selections (with orchestras arranged by Oliver Nelson) and trio features. This CD reissue includes all of the contents from two of Scott's better Impulse albums, Great Scott and For Members Only. In general the eight trio numbers are the most rewarding performances on the disc since the material is fairly superior while the big band tracks emphasize then-current show and movie tunes. Overall this generous CD gives one a good overview of Shirley Scott's playing talents.
