Here's an unexpected complement to the compilations that celebrate Paradise Garage DJ and remixer Larry Levan – such as Journey into Paradise: The Larry Levan Story and Classic West End Records Remixes. Released by the Harmless-affiliated Backbeats label, Livin' the Night Life: '80s New York Garage Classics does not contain any of the tracks from either previous set and boasts some of best post-disco/pre-house singles from the decade, including Young & Company's "I Like (What You're Doing to Me)," Cultural Vibe's "Ma Foom Bay [Love Chant Mix]," Sleeque's "One for the Money," and the Class Action version of "Weekend" (more electronic-oriented than the Phreek version heard on Journey into Paradise). Serious collectors likely have most of what's here, but newcomers will be knocked out by just about everything.

The Stooges' first album was produced by a classically trained composer; their second was supervised by the former keyboard player with the Kingsmen, and if that didn't make all the difference, it at least indicates why Fun House was a step in the right direction. Producer Don Gallucci took the approach that the Stooges were a powerhouse live band, and their best bet was to recreate the band's live set with as little fuss as possible. As a result, the production on Fun House bears some resemblance to the Kingsmen's version of "Louie Louie" – the sound is smeary and bleeds all over the place, but it packs the low-tech wallop of a concert pumped through a big PA, bursting with energy and immediacy…

Over the last few months, I’ve been reviewing just a few of the Backbeats series of compilations released by Harmless since 2009. This is a comprehensive overview of various genres of music that numbers everything from Deep Soul, Eighties Garage and Northern Soul to Philly Soul, Disco and House music. One of my favorites of the thirty compilations that Backbeats, a subsidiary of Harmless have released is The Big Apple Bites Back-New York House and Remix Culture, released in July 2010. This is compilation that contains a combination of Salsoul and house music, many of which are remixed by various DJs. Among the DJs remixing tracks are Frankie Knuckles, Kerri Chandler, Joe Clausell and Blaze.
