No More Shall We Part ended a four-year recorded silence from Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds. No new material had appeared since 1997's landmark, The Boatman's Call. With that record Cave had finally delivered an entire album of deeply tragic and beautiful love songs without irony, sarcasm, or violence…

The arrival of a new Mogwai album – their eleventh – is cause for great celebration. The album’s title, The Bad Fire, is a working-class Glaswegian term for Hell. It reflects the difficult time that members of the band were going through. New to the studio was American producer John Congleton, known for his work with Explosions In The Sky, Sigur Rós, John Grant and pretty much everyone in between. Congleton’s work can be heard on the album’s three singles. The album opener “God Gets You Back” sounds like Daft Punk being hunted by My Bloody Valentine, while “Fanzine Made Of Flesh” sounds like a victory parade for a baby yeti; and “Lion Rumpus” does actually sound like a lion rumpus. The music of Mogwai is a difficult thing to describe, but an easy thing to experience. At punishing volume, it can annihilate your body, leaving you as little more than a head which should by rights fall helplessly to the ground. Yet the music contains an updraft, a sense of beauty encased in the onslaught. This holds you up, suspended and empowered, reminding you that paradise is your birthright. This is especially true of The Bad Fire. It may have been created in dark conditions, but all that is transcended by the act of four musicians working together here, now, in the moment – the only place where Mogwai exist.

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds Formed after the breakup of the Birthday Party in 1983, Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds are one of the most original and celebrated bands to come out of of the post-punk era, and have continued to make dramatic and challenging music in the decades since. Playing music that mesh with the dark, multi-layered narratives of Cave's lyrics, the Bad Seeds create sounds that are physically and emotionally powerful, imbued with a sense of dynamics and drama that set them apart from their peers. The Bad Seeds' sound evolved steadily over the years along with the lyrical outlook of their leader, from the Birthday Party-influenced chaos of 1984's From Her to Eternity and the blues-flavored minimalism of 1985's The Firstborn Is Dead, through the eloquent, gothic post-punk of 1988's Tender Prey and 1994's Let Love In to the relative warmth and humanity of 1997's The Boatman's Call, the spare but emotionally overpowering soundscapes of 2016's Skeleton Tree and 2019's Ghosteen, and the thoughtful joy of 2024's Wild God. While plenty of musicians would move in and out of the Bad Seeds' lineup over the years, they were always a musical force as powerful as their leader.

A posthumous collection of all of the Wonder Stuff's singles from 1987 to 1993, plus a cover of Slade's "Coz I Love You" from a charity compilation, If the Beatles had Read Hunter…the Singles is both a fine starting point and, for most, all the Wonder Stuff they'll ever actually need. Albums one and three, 1988's The Eight-Legged Groove Machine and 1991's Never Loved Elvis, are solidly entertaining (in wildly differing styles) throughout, but the rest of the group's output was fairly inconsistent. However, in the classic Brit-pop tradition pretty much all of the band's very best material, from the Kinks-like, music hall-style tune "The Size of a Cow" to the manic buzz of "Give Give Give Me More More More," was released as singles. There are a couple of iffy inclusions, particularly the frankly terrible version of Tommy Roe's "Dizzy," recorded in collaboration with British comedian Vic Reeves, but overall, this is a solid, completely representative overview. Those whose curiosity is stoked would do well to buy The Eight-Legged Groove Machine next.

While fans of The Dear Hunter have been waiting in anticipation for the prospective 'Act IV', Casey Crescenzo and the band sent something a little different our way, although equally as exciting; not one, but nine EPs released simultaneously. This project is called 'The Color Spectrum', and each of the EPs is a four song set that is meant to reflect whatever given mood each color evokes. It is granted that nine releases is a pretty difficult chunk to digest all at once, and especially considering that the EPs are currently only available on vinyl, it is a bit of an investment for someone that might only want for of a single album's experience. Luckily, The Dear Hunter did opt to release an album version of 'The Color Spectrum'; a selection of songs from each of the EPs that is meant to give a taste of what the project is all about…
