Welcome to P51, Prog magazine's first cover CD for 2017. This first CD of the new year is certainly overflowing with promise. We feature former Limelight artist Baltic Fleet alongside Polymatters and Nerissa Schwarz, who seem to veer towards the synth side of prog. Then there are some real prog bangers in the shape of Kepler Ten, Kyros, The Fringe and Seas of Mirth, who can't fail to get the foot tapping and the head nodding. There's some stylish progressive rock from Glass Hammer and Aisles, and also from newbie Bugenhagen. Ten tracks of different styles, maybe, but all of the same level of quality.

Welcome to P52, Prog magazine's second cover CD for 2017. You don't get much bigger than Steve Hackett, here with Hungarian jazz band Djabe, lending a new twist to Steve's own The Steppes. Or Oceans Of Slumber, who boldly take on the Moody Blues' Nights In White Satin in emphatic style. Or Japan/Porcupine Tree keysman Richard Barbieri, with new, jazz-flecked solo fare, and of course Touchstone and Ghost Community, who weigh in with some grand, melodic music. Elsewhere, the UK's Beatrix Players add melancholic beauty, and Multi Story complex intrigue. New Australian bands Anubis and Hemina show there's some exciting new music being made Down Under, and Jug Bundish do the same for Costa Rican prog.

After highly successful recordings of works by Brahms, the Schumanns, and Chopin, Imogen Cooper plunges into the world of another great romantic, Franz Liszt, and places him alongside that other giant, Richard Wagner. This is an evocative programme of original compositions and intimate transcriptions, ranging from poetic movements from the Années de Pèlerinage: Italie to darker and deeply elegiac pieces, including Liszt’s La lugubre gondola I and Wagner’s Elegie. It also features a transcription by Zoltán Kocsis of the intensely passionate prelude to Tristan und Isolde. The famous pianist and conductor died prematurely in November 2016. It was his work that inspired this recording to begin with, and Imogen Cooper dedicates the disc to his memory. Breathtaking music in unique interpretations: romanticism without melodrama, virtuosity without fuss.

Growing up with a single mother in San Benito, Texas, the hometown of Tejano star Freddy Fender was not easy for blues singer Charley Crockett. Hitchhiking across the country exposed Crockett to the street life at a young age, following in the footsteps of his relative, American folk hero Davy Crockett, who also lived a wild life on the American frontier. After train hopping across the country, singing on the streets for change in New Orleans’ French Quarter, busking in New York City and performing across Texas and Northern California, Crockett set off to travel the world and lived on the streets of Paris for nearly a year before searching for home in Spain, Morocco, and Northern Africa.
