Ingrid Honkala

Ingrid Laubrock is an extraordinary German-born saxophonist and composer whose work has left a distinct mark on the modern creative scene. Whether performing in a duo with drummer Tom Rainey or pianist Kris Davis, leading a highly unusual septet in Serpentines (2016), or expanding her vision into a chamber orchestra in Dreamt Twice, Twice Dreamt (2018), her music consistently exudes quality, complexity, and dedication. Yet, a Laubrock record without her playing feels undeniably different, as is the case with her latest work, Purposing the Air—a double album featuring four different duos and 60 vocalized pieces.

I grew up in a literary household with parents who paid close attention to the written word. My father was a Goethe scholar, and my mother often read to us, pointing out the beauty of the sound of words. I have always felt an affinity for poetry. I appreciate its emotional power to move us and to make us think less literally.

Australian vocalist and lyricist Ingrid James has collaborated with French pianist Alexis Tcholakian's trio for her fifth album, Trajectoire. The collaboration works well, creating a sophisticated collection of songs with depth and beauty.

This album was recorded on the 9th of May 2023 in Sound on Sound Studios in New Jersey, The project itself was an ongoing process of writing for three years. We recorded for 12 full hours.
