With a new year comes new music; that’s where Ryan Chernin enters the scene with his debut EP, You Know Who You Are, out January 13. You Know Who You Are features six songs about “life, love, and loss” and is the product of a year’s worth of work. The mature songs, personal lyrics, and intricate instrumentals feel more like an exploration of self than a combination of songs. The further you get into You Know Who You Are, you feel like you have a better understanding of who Ryan Chernin is.
Brutal and fast death-metal with twisted double-tracked vocals from Kam Lee, resulting in a cross between Mercyful Fate and Death. The deadliest of death-metal always comes from Florida, and this is no exception.
One of the main protagonists of the Italian dance music scene, Planet Funk emerged in 1999 as the fusion of two successful club music outfits, Souled Out (formed by Neapolitan producers Alessandro Sommella, Domenico "GG" Canu, and Sergio Della Monica) and Kamasutra (Florence's keyboard player Marco Baroni and DJ Alex Neri). The name Planet Funk was taken from an old Alex Neri track. English vocalists Auli Kokko and Dan Black were asked to join, and the ensemble mixed the track "Chase the Sun" for the summer of 2000. The song became an unexpected hit in Ibiza, prompting Verve's discoverer David Boyd to sign the group with Virgin Records. The first album, 2002's Non Zero Sumness, went gold and was also crowned at the Italian Music Awards. A remixed version Non Zero Sumness Plus One appeared toward the end of the year, followed by The Illogical Consequence in 2005 and Static in 2006. Other vocalists featured in the albums include Raiss, Sally Doherty, John Graham, and Luke Allen. Planet Funk have been invited to collaborate with Simple Minds, and to remix tracks by New Order and Faithless, among others.
Psychonavigation is a trip and a half. Pete Namlook and Bill Laswell have created a set of sonic hallucinogens that permeate the psyche. These sequences and atmospheres are full of experimental sounds, strange samples, and overt space music riffs. There is nothing earthly about this music. The atmospheres are inhuman. The evocations are metallic and robotic. The flow, however, is smooth and fluid. Namlook and Laswell are visiting the ultimate oxymoron – fluid metal. The answers are as mysterious as quicksilver itself. This is one of the best Namlook/Laswell collaborations. It will appeal to fans of Amani, Tales, and Dweller at the Threshold. It is essential space music.
Kscope label digipak CD edition of the sixth solo album from Mick Karn (originally released on the Invisible Hands label in 2004). More Better Different sees Karn utilising guitars, clarinet, samples and spoken word in nine mood pieces, which swing from the winningly funky The Jump to the cinematic noodling of The End Gag to the wah guitar and 80's sci-fi soundtrack stylings of Atyan B-Boot.
Die Form is chiefly the project of French artist Philippe Fichot, who is usually accompanied by singer Eliane P. Primarily an industrial band, Die Form possess a strong gothic sensibility that is manifested in both the music and in the fetishistic sexual imagery of Fichot's lyrics. The project began by recording a number of experimental cassette releases, starting with Die Form 1 in 1977, and with the first Die Form vinyl release ('Die Puppe') appearing in 1982. Whilst the project was still in its infancy, the underlying concepts were still evident - a combination of esoteric electronic experiments with an underlying theme of erotism, death and other 'taboo' subjects, apparent in both the music and the album artwork, which Philippe also produces.
The Salzburg-based band Blank Manuskript seems to be a musical chamber of wonder - internationally successful with uncompromisingly bizarre rock music, the ensemble gained a unique reputation. Their music is characterized by its sophisticated symphonic arrangements as well as extensive psychedelic improvisations, thus rocking our everyday listening habits. Blank Manuskript creates music paired with mystical-vivid lyrics to transfer its audience into flamboyant musical spheres that have a unique effect on the listeners. Socio-critical escapism unites with creative excellence, creating contemporary programmatic rock music for insiders and seekers, far beyond the inhuman banality of the media machine.
