Inside Charlie's Chocolate Factory

Celebrates the history of one of Britain's iconic institutions. For almost 200 years, Cadbury has been the home of chocolate, making a staggering 350 tonnes of milk chocolate a day. It's far more than just a factory as from the beginning it set out to build a magical place for its employees. However, it's not always been a sweet story.

Behind the scenes of the confectionery company, telling the story of a business that started out making cocoa and drinking chocolate almost 200 years ago, eventually evolving into one of the most famous chocolate brands in the world. But over the past 150 years the company has been rocked by scandal, including a salmonella scare and a hostile takeover bid. This documentary looks at the good and the bad times for Cadbury.

SBS's next iteration of slow TV will take viewers into Australia's multicultural and Indigenous history via an exploration of the country's most popular chocolate company - Cadbury. This three-hour documentary will take a 'paddock-to-plate' approach by following the chocolates' journey from the raw ingredients - the idyllic dairy farms of Tasmania and the sugar plantations of tropical North Queensland - to the factory floor, where the audience will be immersed and mesmerised in the melting, rolling, drying, shaping and wrapping that goes into making Easter eggs and bunnies.

Inside Cadbury: Chocolate Secrets Unwrapped (Channel 4) was clearly intended as a jolly puff piece. It would offer us, it promised, “unique access inside its secretive Willy Wonka world” – a tenuous relationship with standard grammar and immediate recourse to the laziest of cliches being the twin poles around which such creations are traditionally strung. I was all up for it. The video doing the rounds on social media recently of a Wall’s Viennetta being made can only soothe for so long. I was looking forward to an even sweeter treat, something akin to an extended version of the Sesame Street segments that used to show products rolling through factory assembly lines.

Originally released in 1971, Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory was an imaginative film that drew as much inspiration from the leftover vibes (and drugs) of the psychedelic '60s as it did from Roald Dahl's fanciful children's book, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. If you doubt it, check out this special 25th anniversary edition of the original soundtrack album, which features lyrics and music by Anthony Newley, who was a major influence on David Bowie and whose work on this film has clearly inspired '90s rockers from Veruca Salt (who took their name from the spoiled rich girl) to the Butthole Surfers (who could easily cover the sinister, trippy "Wondrous Boat Ride".
