GEAR IN [AIKE85] This monograph is based on my doctoral thesis which I wrote dur­ ing my work at the Interdisciplinary Center for Scientific Computing (IWR) at the Ruprecht-Karls University of Heidelberg. One of my intentions was and still is to stress the practical aspects leading from the conception of mathematical methods to their effective and efficient realization as scientific software. In my own experience, I had always wished there had been something to guide me through this engineering process which accompanies the basic research for which there were nu­ merous treatises dealing, e.g., with mathematical theory for descriptor systems.

The Special Issue Modeling and Simulation in Engineering, belonging to the section Engineering Mathematics of the Journal Mathematics, publishes original research papers involving advanced simulation and modeling techniques. The present book, "Modeling and Simulation in Engineering 2nd Edition, 2023", contains 13 papers accepted after peer review by recognized specialists in the field. The papers address different topics in engineering that use modeling, optimization as well as experimental and numerical methods. The subject of the papers addresses technical problems such as adaptive contoller design for non-linear systems, simulation of light scattering produced by special paints, estimation of the magnetic field produced by overhead power lines, angle estimation using inertial measurement units, study of multiple transfer phenomena in viscuous fluid flow, optimization of aircraft tail using numerical methods, the study of new types of adjustable speed drives, investigation of nano-fluid flow in different systems, metaheuristic methods applied for maximum power point tracking in photovoltaic systems, as well as theoretical topics such as the use of surrogate models in optimization problems and characterization of structured singular values.

The structured singular values and skewed structured singular values are the well-known mathematical quantities and bridge the gap between linear algebra and system theory. It is wellknown fact that an exact computation of these quantities is NP-hard. The NP-hard nature of structured singular values and skewed structured singular values allow us to provide an estimations of lower and upper bounds which guarantee the stability and instability of feedback systems in control. In this paper, we present new results on the dual characterization of structured singular values and skewed structured singular values. The results on the estimation of upper bounds for these two quantities are also computed.
