The Proclaimers - The Very Best Of (25 Years 1987-2012) (2013)
FLAC (tracks) - 740 MB | MP3 CBR 320 kbps - 255 MB
1:49:30 | Pop Rock, Folk Rock, Celtic | Label: Parlophone UK

Handpicked by charismatic, bespectacled Scottish siblings Craig and Charlie Reid, the 30 tracks that make up this two-disc greatest-hits compilation represent the cream of the crop from all nine of the Proclaimers' studio albums, from 1987's gutsy, stripped-down This Is the Story to 2012's sugary and infinitely more settled Like Comedy. Listeners who recoil upon hearing the churning, palm-muted guitar line that opens their most notable pop culture offering, 1988's near perfect folk-pop earworm "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)," will retreat into the shadows even further at the thought of enduring nearly two hours of like-minded whimsy, but longtime fans, many of whom consider tracks like "Sunshine on Leith," "Letter from America," "Throw the 'R' Away," and "Oh Jean" to be far superior examples of why the Reid brothers are so beloved, both at home and abroad, will thrill to the idea of having almost (where is the magnificent "Over & Done With"?) all of their favorites, many of which have been remastered, together in one place.

Inspired by the visionary French poet Arthur Rimbaud’s unfinished poetry collection Illuminations (1874), this is an elegant, animated collaboration between two brilliant musicians. The compositions are written and played by Danish saxophonist Benjamin Koppel, with the great Frenchman Jean-Michel Pilc on piano, and are rich with celebration of French culture and philosophy, its sophistication and history…

The first of two albums the Modern Jazz Quartet recorded at the Music Inn in Lenox, MS, this LP is highlighted by "Oh Bess, Oh Where's My Bess," "Two Degrees East, Three Degrees West," "A Morning in Paris," and "England's Carol" which is the MJQ's reworking of "God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen." Clarinetist Jimmy Giuffre sits in with the group successfully on three numbers; best is "Fun." This is a worthwhile outing that has not yet been reissued on CD.

Easily the most hard-hitting of Blue Note's 2LP Lighthouse Live series from the early 70s – and a record that really lets Elvin Jones and his group stretch out and play! The setting is a perfect one for Jones – given the boundless energy already present on his studio sessions for Blue Note at the time – really fierce work that goes beyond even his classic Coltrane performances – pushing the limits in a sweet blend of rhythm and reeds! The group here is Elvin's razor-edge combo from the early 70s – the one that features Gene Perla on fat funky bass, and both Steve Grossman and Dave Liebman playing choppy reeds along with the grooves – really amazing hornmen at this point in their career, blowing here with interplay that's simply fantastic!

Through Tony Bennett's long, remarkable career, it's possible to trace the evolution and endurance of vocal pop and jazz in the 20th century. Unlike his idol Frank Sinatra, Bennett was too young to be part of the first wave of the Great American Songbook in the years before World War II.

In East Germany in the early 1970’s Martin Zeichnete worked as a sound editor for DEFA, (Deutsche Film-Aktiengesellschaft), the state-owned film studio. Like many young East Germans of the time he would listen furtively to West German radio at night and became infatuated with the Kosmische Musik or ‘Krautrock’ epitomised by the likes of Kraftwerk, Neu! and Cluster emerging from his neighbouring country. Martin, a keen runner, hit upon the idea of using the repetitive, motorik beats of this new music as a training aid for athletes. He thought it could benefit the mind as well as the body with the pulsing, hypnotic music bringing focus. A ‘borrowed’ prototype of Andreas Pavel’s Stereobelt showed Martin the technology to provide music on the move already existed and could easily be adapted for runners.
