Hydrodynamics is the science which deals with the v motion of liquid in the macroscopic sense. It is essentially a field which is regarded as applied mathematics because it deals with the mathematical treatments of basic equations for a fluid continuum obtained on a purely Newtonian basis. It is also the foundation of hydraulics, which, as an art, has to compromise with the rigorous mathematical treatments because of nonlinear effects, inherent instability, turbulence, and the complexity of" boundary conditions" encountered in engineering practice. Therefore, this book can be considered as the text for a course in basic hydrodynamics, as well as for a course in the fundamentals of hydraulic and related engineering disciplines.

This book offers an overview of the fundamental dynamical processes, which are necessary to understand astrophysical phenomena, from the viewpoint of hydrodynamcs, magnetohydrodynamics, and radiation hydrodynamics.

The continuing demand for this book by students of Engineering, Science and Applied Mathematics appears to justify this new edition. In its general revision, numerous minor changes have been made to the text, a new chapter devoted to Vortex Motion has been added and Chapters 4 and 5 have been extended by the inclusion of treat- ment of the Method of Images and its applications. The t r ~ a t m e n t of some aspects of the flow of real fluids in Chapter 2 is purposely brief since it is assumed that the Engineering and Science students, for whom the chapter is primarily intended, will have had an introduction to fluid mechanics.
