BASSIC VIBES is mostly playing compositions of Erich Fischer. His pieces originate from the stylistically manyfold and diversified world of jazz. The music of this «jazz trio» has been arranged in an original and interesting way. In the theme parts, the vibraphone, the double bass and the percussion are set according their rhythmical, melodical and harmonical possibilities. In the improvised parts, there is much space for musical interactions, in trio, duo or solo. The plucked and bowed strings of the double bass, combined with the beated and bowed bars of the vibraphone, result in charming and beautiful colours of sounds. The drums and cymbals played by the cuban master-percussionist enrich the sound of BASSIC VIBES in a fundamental way. He accompanies in a sensitive manner and is playing inspiring solos. All these pecularities of BASSIC VIBES are presenting «good vibes» to the audience.

Between 1960 and 1963 Texas tenor Curtis Amy (1927-2002) made six superb albums for Dick Bocks Pacific Jazz label, three of which, Groovin Blue, Way Down, and Tippin on Through, are included here. They were part of Bocks recognition of the emergence on the West Coast scene of a more groove-based, harder swinging approach than the cooler, considered style that preceded it. He chose well. Years of semi-obscurity in L.A. dance bands and organ combos had made Amy a thoroughly seasoned, assertive and inventive player in the mould of fellow tenor, Harold Land; these Pacific albums established him as a major exponent of the new music revitalizing West Coast jazz.

Four CD set. Wind Borne - The Island Albums 1974-1978 features newly remastered versions of Floating World, Waves, Kites, and Way Of The Sun. After releasing a series of albums for Vertigo Records, the original line-up of Jade Warrior split in 1973. Flautist Jon Field and innovative guitarist Tony Duhig decided to continue under the moniker and embarked on composing and recording a series of wonderful albums for Island Records in 1974. Coming to the attention of Island founder Chris Blackwell through a recommendation from Steve Winwood, Island issued Floating World in 1974. Stylistically, Jade Warrior had now evolved into an instrumental entity, pioneering a unique fusion of ethnic Japanese influences and ambient progressive rock which soon became critically acclaimed. The 1975 album Waves took this template still further and featured guest musician Steve Winwood on piano and Moog synthesizer. Kites, issued in 1976, was even more ambitious, featuring a host of guest musicians including Fred Frith of Henry Cow and Clodagh Simmons of Mellow Candle. Jade Warrior's final album for Island Records, Way Of The Sun, was issued in 1978 and was arguably their finest album. An incredibly evocative work, inspired by the mythology of the Incas, the album saw Field and Duhig at the peak of their creative powers.

Vibraphonist Lionel Hampton was extremely active as a bandleader throughout a good portion of his career, with numerous live and studio recordings. This live performance, evidently taped for broadcast around 1961 in Malibu Beach, originally appeared on the obscure Parade label, and was finally reissued on the English label Jasmine. There's nothing particularly significant about the date, as Hampton plays his perennial flag-waver "Flying Home" as well several long-forgotten originals. Hampton is the primarily soloist, mostly on vibes, but also joining his pianist for some two-finger piano on the finale, "Shortness of Breath," which is actually "Hamp's Boogie Woogie" minus its typical "Hey Ba Ba Re Bop" vocals.

With the addition, in 1957, of vibist Dave Pike to what used to be a trio, the 24-year-old Canadian pianist, Paul Bley, formed the exciting quartet that recorded this excellent album, titled Solemn Meditation, for Gene Norman. Pike had a passion and jazz feeling that fired the band, and the contrast with Bley’s angular, two-handed approach and time, more subtly pulsing than overtly driving, worked. Drummer McBrowne remained the guts of the group, driving his colleagues with intelligence and imagination, while Haden was a constantly growing bass player in close rapport with his teammate, and a reliable timekeeper.

Jazz / Contemporary Jazz / New Chamber Music / Modern Creative

Percussionist John Hollenbeck's Claudia Quintet belongs to a sub-genre all by itself : it combines elements of jazz, prog rock and chamber music. The band is already on its fourth album ("four"?), and always with the same line-up : Chris Speed on clarinet and sax, Matt Moran on vibes, Ted Reichman on accordion, Drew Gress on bass and Hollenbeck himself on drums. The compositions are like lightly flowing rivers, with repetitive undertones, complex interacting melodies and often changing rhythms. The overall musical effect is more important than the musician's soloing. There are solos of course, but they don't carry the weight of the performance.
