Saxophonist Candy Dulfer's sophomore album, 1993's Sax-A-Go-Go, built upon the smooth jazz of her debut while also playing up more of her hip-hop and dance music influences. Once again working with producer/multi-instrumentalist Ulco Bed, Dulfer delved even deeper into the club-ready funk and acid jazz that was in its heyday during the early '90s…

Big Girl is the third album by Dutch alto saxophonist Candy Dulfer. Prior to its release, she had been working mainly with Ulco Bed. She was impressed, however, with Thomas Bank, an up-and-coming producer and keyboard player. This work marks the transition between the two producers and as a result has a much more funky style and tries to incorporate elements of rap and hip hop into contemporary jazz. The album features a collaboration with Trijntje Oosterhuis, on the track "Funkyness", before Trijntje became widely known as a singer. The album is mainly instrumental. According to her official biography, the title of the album was an inside joke, referring to her father Hans Dulfer's album Big Boy and indicating that she had grown up and was in charge of her own career. The album peaked at #28 in the Dutch album chart.

Jazz / Contemporary Jazz / Smooth Jazz | Release Date: 1991 | Label: Arista

In the early '90s, Arista Records marketed Candy Dulfer in the much same way it would market a pop or rock singer and did everything it could to exploit the Dutch saxophonist's great looks. Unfortunately, the sexy publicity shots Arista sent out with her debut effort, Saxuality, were more impressive than the album itself — a forgettable R&B/pop/jazz recording that's smothered by excessive production. Though the R&B-ish compositions (many written by producer Ulco Bed) aren't bad, the highly predictable Dulfer consistently comes across as a poor man's David Sanborn and does very little improvising. A funk-influenced version of Miles Davis' "So What" might have been worthwhile, but is destroyed by its stiff production and Dulfer's refusal to improvise.

Dressed in a white jumpsuit, legs crossed, sandy blond hair perfectly coiffed, and sitting in a comfy tan chair with her trusty alto sax, Candy Dulfer looks perfectly angelic on the cover of her third album, For the Love of You. Some of the goofy shots on the inside sleeve cast her in the more mischievous light of her almost lookalike Jenny McCarthy, but the overall packaging — and that dazzling smile — caresses the eyes with femininity. But her deeper musical dimensions are decidedly masculine. Once she starts to blow, Dulfer is as aggressive, gritty, and boisterous as her primary alto inspirations, David Sanborn and Maceo Parker. She also invokes the groove intensive rock-soul flavors of Prince, who enlisted Dulfer to play on numerous projects in the early '90s (when he was still Prince) after she played on the road with Pink Floyd — hardly a pastel-and-angora kind of pedigree. Anyone who dug Saxuality and its buoyant 1993 follow-up, Sax-A-Go-Go, knows Dulfer enters the party ready to cut loose, and won't be disappointed by the buoyant goings-on here. From the frisky jam "Saxy Mood" (on which Dulfer treats her horn as a percussive instrument) to the hypnotic, heavily looped invitation to "Gititon," For the Love of You is a big-hearted, festive affair, complete with vocal effects that simulate background conversations.

Of all Lee Morgan's many albums, I think this is one of his best - it at least is the one I like most. It's the only album Morgan made where he's the only horn; he's joined by Sonny Clark (p) Doug Watkins (b) and Art Taylor (d). Tune selection is excellent: the title track and Jimmy Heath's C.T.A. really swing, as does ALL AT ONCE YOU LOVE HER, which contains excellent solo work by Lee. Clark is in fine form. Everything just clicked perfectly on this outing, and it ended up being a great date for everyone. Hard bop at its finest and an excellent example of the "simple" but exquisite one step (less is more) recording technique of Rudy Van Gelder. When you listen to this album you should realize that this superb sounding recording was made more than 50 years ago !!!! Shake hands with Lee…..he's standing in the left corner of your listening room, blowing your head off !!!!
