Georg Philipp Telemann (1681–1767) is one of the most outstanding German Baroque composers and was an influential musical force in the first half of the 18th century. After initial success as a musician in Leipzig, in 1712 he was appointed the city director of music and Kapellmeister in Frankfurt am Main. He gained widespread international fame by 1737/38 at the latest by performing several concerts in Paris. Of his over 1,400 extant sacred cantatas, the maestro composed at least 54 for bass solo.

"Imagine the universe beginning to sing and resound," Mahler wrote of his Symphony No. 8, the "Symphony of a Thousand." "It is no longer human voices; it is planets and suns revolving." Mahler was late Romantic music's ultimate big thinker. In his own lifetime he was generally regarded as a conductor who composed on the side, producing huge, bizarre symphonies accepted only by a cult following. Born in 1860 in Kalischt, Bohemia, he came from a middle-class family.

All-star jams can go two ways. They either turn out a muddled mess, or inspire everyone involved to new heights of musical synergy. Fortunately for blues, R&B, and soul fans, Triple Trouble belongs firmly in the latter category. It helps that Castro, Jones (guitar), and Hall (sax, harmonica) have different strengths, which complement one another nicely. It also helps having the renowned Double Trouble on board; one couldn't ask for a tighter, tastier backup band. Together, this group ranges all over the musical map, from traditionally-inflected blues ("Raised in the Country") to James Brown-style funk ("Cold Funk"). With Telarc Records clean, crisp production every note comes out clear, showcasing these three artists to their best advantage. They might not be superstars, but they've got their mojo workin'.

The trashed hotel room and communal living depicted on the cover of the J. Geils Band's sophomore album tell you all you need know about the music, spirit, and energy spilling from within The Morning After. Shot through with raw, lean Rock n' Roll sparked by juke-joint blues and loose rhythms, the 1971 set comes on like the most fun, party-still-raging hangover any group in the 70s enjoyed. And now it rolls with an abandon that takes you inside the sweaty, smoky roadhouses and wall-to-wall-packed clubs the group dominated in its heyday. Spirited, Blues-Driven Rock n' Roll Comes on Like a Never-Ending Party: features ace performances by harmonica player Magic Dick Salwitz and vocalist Peter Wolf.

Reinhard Keiser’s Der blutige und sterbende Jesus is not only the very first German Passion oratorio but also a highly suspenseful contribution to the Passion season. Lost for many years, it is now available for listening on CD in the revised version of 1729. The dramatic and musical design of Keiser’s work is astonishing. As in the Italian oratorio type that gained currency after 1700, there is no Evangelist or other narrator, which means that the work has a purely dramatic structure. Even though Keiser’s librettist Christian Friedrich Hunold, whose pseudonym was »Menantes,« did not cite any one of the four Evangelists word for word in his adaptation of the Passion narrative, it is quite evident that the poetic elaboration is (primarily) modelled on Luther’s translation of the Gospel of Matthew.
