Her story is one of the most legendary of all twentieth century musicians' stories, and also, one of the most tragic. Cellist Jacqueline Du Pré, born on January 26, 1945, in Oxford, England, to Derek and Iris Du Pré. (Despite the family name, Derek Du Pré was not French, but rather of British Channel Island ancestry; he could trace his lineage back to the Norman Conquest).

Cellist Jacqueline du Pré needs little introduction to most listeners. Whether as a result of being perhaps the most prominent female cellist in the last century, her meteoric rise to fame at a young age, the equally rapid decline of her career at the hands of multiple sclerosis, or simply the incredible passion with which she performed, du Pré possessed a singular capacity to make an impression on her audiences. She was single-handedly responsible for reviving the long-dormant Elgar concerto that was to become one of her trademark pieces.

This disc, recorded live toward the end of Jacqueline du Pré's grievously short career, displays both her irresistible magic–the sumptuous, warm tone, the spontaneous immediacy of expression, the technical and emotional risk-taking born of total faith in her talent and musical instincts–and her unbridled excesses: the liberties, the extreme tempi and tempo changes, the passionate abandon, the incessant slow, sentimental slides.

At a young age, cellist Jacqueline du Pre achieved mainstream popularity. She is regarded as one of the most distinctive cellists of the last half of the 20th century. Her career was cut short by a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis which stopped her performances at the age of 27. This release was recorded November 11, 1970 at the Medinah Temple in Chicago du Pre and contains Dvorak’s 3 movements: Allegro, Adagio ma non troppo and Finale: Allegro Moderato as well as the additional piece of music Silent Woods, Op. 68.

Jacqueline du Pré and Stephen Kovacevich (then known as Stephen Bishop) formed a short but acclaimed chamber duet in the early 1960s, while the pianist had moved to London where he met his partner, to study with Myra Hess. Their successful tour in Britain led to the studio recording of this superb album of two Beethoven sonatas. An excellent addition to the complete set of sonatas and variations recorded live with Daniel Barenboim a few years later!

If ever a performance of Schumann's Piano Concerto stressed the principle of dialogue between soloist and conductor, then this is it. True, the Philharmonia's string ensemble isn't as watertight under Fischer-Dieskau as it might have been under some other conductors; and poetry is invested at the premium of relatively low-level drama. Orchestral textures are absolutely right for Schumann – warm yet transparent, full-bodied yet never stodgy – and poetry is a major priority. Add Barenboim's compatible vision and keyboard finesse, and you indeed have a memorable reading.

The tragedy of du Pré’s brief career is still fresh in the public memory and can be summarised here. She was born in Oxford on 26 January 1945 into a middle-class family in which music was important: her mother was a fine pianist and a gifted teacher. The French-sounding name came from her father’s Channel Islands ancestry. Just before her fifth birthday, when she was already showing musical promise, she heard the sound of a cello on the radio and the course of her life was set.

A few years before signing her first contract with EMI, Jacqueline du Pré, who was already in the public eye for noted performances on stage and on television, gave her very first recordings before the microphones of the BBC. Surrounded by experienced accompanists such as Ernest Lush and William Pleeth and another rising star, the young Stephen Kovacevich with whom she then formed a short-lived but successful chamber duet, she gave splendid renditions of major pieces of the repertoire (two Bach suites, a cello sonata by Brahms, transcriptions of works by Falla and Handel, and a set of pieces here performed for two cellos from Couperin’s Les goûts-réünis).
