Jazz / Bebop / Post Bop / Piano Trio

Two early sixties LPs of inventive piano trio jazz, now available on one CD. These sparkling recordings were praised by the critics and the public alike. This is fundamentally a bebop/jazz combo album, but there is a great deal of creativity at work; this is quirky stuff. Great jazz by a man who is popularly considered the formost Swedish jazz musician.

Jan Johansson (16 September 1931 – 9 November 1968) was a Swedish jazz pianist. He is little known outside Scandinavia and his records are not widely available, though Jazz på svenska (Jazz in Swedish) has sold more than a quarter of a million copies, and is the best selling jazz release ever in Sweden, and has been streamed more than 10 million times on Spotify. He was the father of former HammerFall drummer Anders Johansson and Stratovarius keyboardist Jens Johansson, who nowadays run Heptagon Records which keeps their father's recordings available.

The two Swedes Jan Lundgren and Hans Backenroth are musical storytellers, their playing is without any vanity and full of vivid stories. Qualities that Lundgren has already demonstrated with his own projects, the pan-European success trio "Mare Nostrum" and in duos with trombonist and singer Nils Landgren and bass icon Georg Riedel. Especially the latter finds a worthy continuation in the collaboration with Backenroth, an internationally sought-after European bassist.

When listening to Anders Widmark's Psalmer, it is almost inevitable to mention Jan Johansson and especially his jazzy adaptations of Swedish folk melodies, heard on Jazz På Svenska. The way the melodies are jazzified as well as the piano playing (at least at times) bear similarities to Johansson, but instead of using folk music, Psalmer draws its material from the official Swedish book of church hymns.

It was through the influence of Landgren and Svensson’s former teacher Bengt-Arne Wallin, who recorded the landmark album “Old Folklore In Swedish Modern” back in 1962 (ACT 9254-2), that Svensson and Landgren were inspired to make a duo album centered around folk songs. In August 1997 both went into the studio and with only trombone and piano recorded Swedish Folk Modern (ACT 9257-2). Their improvised treatments of the classic songs of the folk culture not only impressed the public; it brought praise from the press.
