For saxophonists not familiar with Bloom's playing, this is an excellent release to do so with. The tunes are a mixture of originals and arranged standards and offer some great ensemble playing as well as solo work. Bloom has also procured a stellar group to create the music with as well, including Kenny Wheeler on trumpet and flugelhorn, Julian Priester on trombones, Bobby Previte on drums, Rufus Reid on bass, and Fred Hersch on piano. Bloom's soprano tone should be a benchmark for musicians wishing to hear what a well-played soprano saxophone sounds like. Not only is her "sound" superb, so are her incredibly well-chosen notes in solo passages. Bloom has an great amount of facility in all registers and blends this seemlessly with the arrangements around her.

Over a fruitful career versatile soprano saxophonist Jane Ira Bloom has demonstrated a singular artistic voice and a restlessly explorative spirit. Since 2010 she has gone from the free flowing, edgy and electrifying Wingwalker (Outline 2010) to the serene and ethereal Sixteen Sunsets (Outline 2013) and now she presents the earthy and exuberant Early Americans. Her easily recognizable sound and facile virtuosity leave her indelible mark on all these recordings, making them each unique yet simultaneously integral parts of the same body of work.

Jane Ira Bloom is teamed with pianist Fred Hersch in a quartet that explores a variety of melodic material in unexpected ways. Bloom, one of the top soprano saxophonists around and a creative user of electronics, has a fairly original tone and her improvisations are consistently full of surprises. Check out her transformations of "I Loves You Porgy" and "If I Should Lose You" on this Columbia LP.

Art & Aviation is not only one of Jane Ira Bloom's finest albums, it is also a remarkably successful (and fairly early) attempt to bring electronic influences to bear on acoustic jazz. Bloom's writing is strongly infused with a straight-ahead jazz aesthetic. But she veers left on many cuts, altering her soprano sax sound with live electronics and also having drummer Jerry Granelli double on electro-acoustic percussion. While most tracks still sound very much like jazz, the electronics, while never becoming obtrusive, give everything an unpredictable edge. "Most Distant Galaxy" and the title track are Bloom's most radical departures, but there are electronics aplenty, even on her subtle reworking of Thelonius Monk's "Straight No Chaser"…

Bloom’s experiment is in fact much bolder and intellectually profound than it may first appear. Certainly, many musicians throughout time have approached sculpture, writing, and painting for inspiration, and vice versa. But what Bloom has done is significantly different because Pollack consistently identified jazz methodologies with his work. In some ways, then, what Bloom has attempted is a translation into sound of Pollack’s transmutation of sound into color and movement. The result is a series of dense, explorative compositions, the faultless execution of which delineates the thoroughly progressive and acutely perspicacious nature of Bloom’s writing.

American original Jane Ira Bloom does it again. This time the 21st-century soprano saxophonist reimagines the poetry of 19th-century visionary Emily Dickinson in two different settings. Her new 2 Cd pack showcases her jazz quartet s interpretation of Dickinson s poetry and includes a second version for jazz quartet and spoken word featuring readings by popular stage & film actor Deborah Rush. After the success of her 2016 trio album release Early Americans, Bloom shifts gears with Wild Lines / Improvising Emily Dickinson (OTL143) showcasing her acclaimed quartet in dialogue with poetry in her seventeenth album and first foray into music and text.

Some jazz feels like it could go anywhere at any moment, latitude being the music's most enviable quality. Jane Ira Bloom's "Always Hope" is certainly distinguished by such a feel. Opening The Red Quartets with a swirl of sound from Fred Hersch's piano, Mark Dresser's bass, and Bobby Previte's drums, the soprano saxophonist creates nothing but liberty. As Hersch's foot pedal keeps his chords in the air, the leader's horn lines glide through them. Previte's cymbals match the pianist's pulse and sundry thoughts present themselves. "That piece basically introduces you to what we're about," explains Bloom, "which is adventure. I'm a bit of a sound searcher, and 'Always Hope' encapsulates that - if anything, it's a four-and-a-half-minute journey. My interests are in strong melodic motion and deep rhythm.

This was, in a way, soprano saxophonist Jane Ira Bloom's debut, in that it was the first of her albums to be put out by a label she did not herself own – her first two records were self-produced. Even at such an early stage in her development one can hear the attention to craft that would always characterize her work, though her skills at this point were not what they would later become.

Jane Ira Bloom looms as one of the most important soprano saxophonists in modern jazz. Armed with a distinctive tone and a proclivity to execute serpentine lines amid various tremolo and vibrato techniques, the artist also reaps the benefits of a topnotch rhythm section on this 2001 release. Throughout, drummer Bobby Previte and bassist Mark Dresser provide sympathetic yet quietly energetic support on this multifarious set, consisting of variegated swing motifs, subtle interludes, and exploratory themes. However, Bloom's expressive phraseology, acute integration of memorable melodies with free jazz-style dialogue, and penchant for intertwining spirited lyricism with fiery passion provide an enticing contrast to pianist Vincent Bourgeyx' rhythmically charged chord progressions. Otherwise, Bloom's tranquil yet hauntingly beautiful solo soprano saxophone performance on the standard "How Are Things in Glocca Morra" demonstrates her near flawless utilization of space and eloquent conveyance of heartfelt sentiment.

More lost gems are unearthed in this fourth volume of music by contemporaries of the Strauss family. This programme takes us from rousing gallops and polkas to gentler salon pieces and waltzes, including music from the era of the fateful Titanic and the changing tastes of the 1920s. It includes orchestral premieres and reconstructions from scant sources, representing a vivid cross section of popular music from a century and more ago. Some of these composers have already been represented in previous volumes, but some will be entirely new even to enthusiasts of this musical period. So much material was destroyed during the two world wars that we are fortunate to have much of this music at all, but it is also thanks to dedicated research and conductor John Georgiadis reconstructions that it all sounds so freshly minted in this excellent recording.
