Jean-Michel Pilc’s artistry comes from an expansive imagination and a fearless sensibility of musical exploration. He is self-taught as a piano player and composer. There is liberty that comes with that, an unobstructed view of the palette of music and harmony. On his latest solo release, Symphony, Pilc realizes that fearlessness and freedom completely.

Most people believe that growing up and getting older goes hand in hand with acquiring more knowledge and wisdom. It may be comforting to think that life teaches you things, and there is often some truth to it. However, to me, there is also a parallel, deeper reality at work.

Jean-Michel Pilc has lots of surprises in store for listeners in New Dreams. Well accompanied by bassist Thomas Bramerie and either Ari Hoenig or Mark Mondesir on drums, his unusual, consistently twisting arrangement of the standard "But Not for Me" defies predictable paths, darting in and out of the melody as he builds the tension. Thad Jones' lush ballad "A Child Is Born" finds him alternating between substitutions in each hand, creating a dreamy, impressionist flavor and ending the piece mid-phrase for effect.

Jean-Michel Pilc's first solo piano CD is a thought-provoking mix of originals, standards, and classic jazz compositions. His jaunty approach to the venerable "St. Louis Blues" is extremely playful, incorporating dazzling post-bop runs. "My Favorite Things" is recast in a dark setting, adding hand-muted and plucked piano strings along with thunderous tremolos, as if an intense thunderstorm were approaching.
