How do we become who we are? Those who go before us, what do they pass on to us? Do we inherit something? What does a role model, an early source of inspiration, mean? In the title track on her new album Queen on the Hillside, dedicated to her grandmothers and to those who have gone before, Jeanette Lindström explores what it means to have someone who sets the example to never give up, and at the same time conveys lust, the courage to dream and the freedom to create something of your own. Finding your own way.

Feathers travels a different road than Jeanette Lindström's previous albums. Whereas earlier releases had her sounding like an Afro American singer with overtones of Abbey Lincoln and Diane Reeves, her newest is introspective and soft. There is no hint of soul, R & B or anything resembling an up tempo pace. This change of rhythms may have something to do with the label. Her earlier recordings were with the Caprice label which has featured African/Middle Eastern music.

R.E.M. marked the point when post-punk turned into alternative rock. When their first single, "Radio Free Europe," was released in 1981, it sparked a back-to-the-garage movement in the American underground. While there were a number of hardcore and punk bands in the U.S. during the early '80s, R.E.M. brought guitar pop back into the underground lexicon. Combining ringing guitar hooks with mumbled, cryptic lyrics and a D.I.Y. aesthetic borrowed from post-punk, the band simultaneously sounded traditional and modern. Though there were no overt innovations in their music, R.E.M. had an identity and sense of purpose that transformed the American underground. Throughout the '80s, they worked relentlessly, releasing records every year and touring constantly, playing both theaters and backwoods dives. Along the way, they inspired countless bands, from the legions of jangle pop groups in the mid-'80s to scores of alternative pop groups in the '90s, who admired their slow climb to stardom.

Murmur is the debut studio album by American alternative rock band R.E.M., released on April 12, 1983 by I.R.S. Records. Murmur drew critical acclaim upon its release for its unusual sound, defined by lead singer Michael Stipe's cryptic lyrics, guitarist Peter Buck's jangly guitar style, and bass guitarist Mike Mills' melodic basslines. Since its release, Murmur has featured heavily in various "must have" lists compiled by the music media. In 1989, it was rated number eight on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 100 greatest albums of the 1980s.
