Sam Phillips didn't record anybody else the way he recorded Jerry Lee Lewis. With other artists, he pushed and prodded, taking his time to discover the qualities that made them uniquely human, but with Jerry Lee, he just turned the tape on and let the Killer rip. There was no need to sculpt because Lewis arrived at Sun Studios fully formed, ready to lean back and play anything that crossed his mind. Over the course of seven years, that's more or less how things were run at Sun: Lewis would sit at the piano and play, singing songs that were brought to him and songs that crossed his mind, and Sam never stopped rolling the tape.

Razor & Tie | 1981 | Country Rock‘n Roll | EAC RIP | FLAC+CUE+LOG+HQ-Covers (400Dpi) | 281Mb+9Mb

This recording was taped live in Stuttgart in 1981 and was co-produced by Cash's future son in law, Rodney Crowell. This set is special in that it brought three of the original Sun Record stars together at about the same time that the mysterious "million dollar quartet" recordings were beginning to surface. The listener will be grabbed in particular when Lewis weighs in with Whole Lotta Shakin', then the trio and the backup band, Cash's band with W.S.Holland (Perkin's original drummer) and Lewis's sideman, Ken Lovelace cook on some southern gospel standards. Lewis contributes several inspired piano solos and backs up Perkins' vocals in a way that makes him (Perkins) reach back for more.
This disc shows why Cash was, and still is pure country and why Perkins and Lewis could straddle the fence between Country and Rock'n Roll. This recording also lets us hear what might of been had someone had the foresight to capture these greats earlier, say in the early seventies. But better late than never, and that has resulted in this magnificent and very enjoyable album !!
