Jessica Pavone – Spam Likely

Jessica Pavone’s compositions demand your attention. This isn’t intended as a threat: it’s an invitation to look beyond the normal parameters of music and the art of listening. Even within the worlds of modern classical composition, the New York-based musician continues to defy convention and smash boundaries by releasing music that focuses on unsettling but deliberate music. “My music is inspired by processes that center intuition and instinct,” Pavone explains in her artist statement. “Learning from sound healers and alternative healing practices to bolster my philosophical interests in the power of sound to illuminate hidden emotions.”

On the evening of July 13th, 2023, I trekked up to Arnold Hall for a very special performance at The Stone. I sat in the front row and took out my notebook then turned to my right and looked around the space. The dimly lit room buzzed with quiet activity and conversation. After a few more minutes, the lights went even lower and out walked three shadowy figures. Each clicked on a small bulb that lit their individual music stands.

A reunion record of sorts, with bass legend Mario Pavone getting together with some long-time colleagues of old in a sextet format. And the results are predictably excellent: multiple horn parts giving life to Pavone’s thorny compositions, a strong yet occasionally unpredictable rhythmic current, and superb musicianship throughout.

Blue Vertical is to be the final recording by the legendary bassist and composer Mario Pavone, who passed on May 15 2021. Though in the final stages of a 17-year battle with cancer, Pavone pushed throughout April 2021 to make sure this music would be a part of his recorded legacy.
