Peggy Lee returned to Capitol Records in 1957 after a five-year stretch at Decca Records, but it wasn't until 1958 that Decca got around to releasing Sea Shells, an LP she had recorded during her tenure with the label. That the recording sat on the shelf for a while is not surprising given the contents, which make it Lee's most unusual album. Accompanied only by harp player Stella Castellucci and harpsichordist Gene DiNovi, she essays a group of art songs and Chinese poetry (thankfully translated into English) on this thoughtful, esoteric project…

Aquoi ça tient une bonne chanson ? À une mélodie toute simple qu’on devine composée à la guitare. À un trémolo en fin de phrase, façon hymne de pub, dont on se dit qu’il est un peu facilement placé et à la limite de l’énervant. Mais qui pourtant émeut et qu’on a envie de reprendre aussi sec. « Chez mes grands-parents y a du gazon / Y a une tombe au fond du bois chaque saison / Je m’y rends jamais, bien sûr j’ai mes raisons / Qu’il faut taire. » The Doug, débarqué de Clermont-Ferrand, n’a pas grandi au bord de la mer. Mais il compose des chansons de marins tristes. Qui paradoxalement donnent de la force. Il se cherche encore au micro.
