Los Indios Tabajaras (The Tabajara Indians) was a guitar duo of two brothers, Antenor Lima and Natalicio (Nato) Lima, from Tianguá, Ceará in the Northeast of Brazil. The group name refers to the Tabajara, indigenous people who lived on the easternmost portion of the Atlantic coast of northeast Brazil in the period before and during Portuguese colonization, in the 16th century…

The Staples' story goes all the way back to 1915 in Winona, Mississippi, when patriarch Roebuck "Pops" Staples entered the world. A contemporary and familiar of Charley Patton's, Roebuck quickly became adept as a solo blues guitarist, entertaining at local dances and picnics. He was also drawn to the church, and by 1937 he was singing and playing guitar with the Golden Trumpets, a spiritual group based out of Drew, Mississippi. Moving to Chicago four years later, he continued playing gospel music with the Windy City's Trumpet Jubilees.

Given the sound of What the World Needs Now, it's difficult to believe that the Sugarman 3 haven't released an album since 2002. After the widely acclaimed Pure Cane Sugar – the trio did the tour thing, and then went on to work on various individual projects – Neal Sugarman (also a member of the Dap-Kings and co-founder of Daptone with Gabriel Roth aka Bosco Mann here) – called organist Adam Scone and drummer Rudy Albin, asking if they were interested in recording. They booked five days in the studio without tunes or expectations. With Daptone family members (especially bassist Mann, trumpeter Dave Guy, conguero Fernando Velez, and guitarist Jospeh Crispiano) joining these loose, kinetic sessions – produced by Mann and recorded on eight tracks by Mann– these cats simply picked up where they left off.

What the World Needs Now Is Love may be titled after a Burt Bacharach and Hal David song, but it as far away from that song musically as one can get and still remain popular music. On her alleged return to her country roots, Wynonna Judd cannot resist the temptation to allow many forms of pop and rock into her sound. But that's fine; just fine. On her first studio outing in three years, Judd turns in a performance that is consistent all the way through, and one that seamlessly blends that astonishing voice of hers with banjos, strings, electric guitars, mandolins, pedal steels, pianos, and lots of drums.

The 10th studio album from John Lydon's best band, and their second since reactivating in 2009 after a 17 year hiatus. With their days making dub-inspired avant-garde experiments now long behind them, "What The World Needs Now" sees PiL settle into a post-punk groove and deliver a string of rambunctious songs. The album is at its best when Lydon confronts modern issues or when he opens up most about his own experiences.

Mahalia Jackson, hailed as one of America's greatest voices, working for Columbia Records, for whom she made 15 albums. The Columbia albums, often with the backing of strings and choirs, had a much tighter, less improvisational feel than her earlier recordings, which exuded a raw power. In 1970 she's even released a pop arranged song collection, "What the World Needs Now".

Jackie DeShannon's work is actually too diverse to be satisfactorily captured on an anthology, even one that includes 28 tracks, as this one does. Still, considering how hard the one DeShannon anthology that might be better than this one is to find (the Australian import Pop Princess), this has to be cited as the recommended first purchase. Focusing on her output for Liberty between 1959 and 1970, it has all the essentials: her two Top Ten hits, the minor hits like "A Lifetime of Loneliness," and the original versions of "Needles and Pins" and "When You Walk in the Room," and a host of fine girl group, ballad, folk-rock, and singer/songwriter flop singles. From the collector's viewpoint, the most interesting songs are the rarities. The six previously unreleased tracks include the exuberant "Breakaway," a hit for Irma Thomas; the rocker "Dream Boy," cut in 1964 in Britain with Jimmy Page on guitar; and a cover of Tim Hardin's "Reason to Believe." A couple of interesting rarities are "For Granted" (from the little-seen movie C'mon, Let's Live a Little) and the 45 version of "Splendor in the Grass," a somewhat sloppy folk-rock performance on which DeShannon was backed by the Byrds.
